Back at it again with our top five rankings in each class. This is week three of the season, but is only week two of the team rankings. I’d like to personally thank Zach McCrite for his Z-Rankings and his help for this information. If you’re at all interested in Indiana high school volleyball, go check out his website, indianaprepvolleyball.com. For the purposes of this article, all records are listed through matches on Monday, August 30.

#5: Lafayette Central Catholic (4-3)

The biggest reason for the Knights being on this list is their win over defending 1A state champ Pioneer over the weekend. Led by [player_tooltip player_id="104212" first="Grace" last="Roach"] (’23, 6-0 MB/OH), LCC earned a 2-1 victory, and should propel them through the rest of their tough schedule and beyond. Gracen is averaging over three kills per set, leads the team in blocks and is hitting over .340 on this young season. Another solid contributor for the Knights is Rachel Vorst (’24, 5-6 DS/L), wearing the special jersey and averaging 5.5 digs per set.

#4: Frontier (9-1)

There’s no denying that the season is in its infancy. A lot of records might be misleading, like LCC’s above. Frontier, however, is no mistake. You can’t fake nine early wins, and Emma Segal (’24, 5-6 OH) is a huge part of that. Probably projecting to be a defensive specialist at the next level, Emma currently the Falcons in kills per set (4.7), hitting percentage (.316), aces and digs. Expect this sensational sophomore to be the leader in those categories all season.

#3: Kouts (8-0)

Undefeated through two full weeks is tough to do. The Mustangs are one of the few that have stayed that way early on, and they have only dropped two sets all season thus far. Senior [player_tooltip player_id="85842" first="Sophia" last="Foster"] (’22, 5-6 DS/L) will be a libero somewhere next fall. For now, she’s crushing it on the left pin, hammering almost five kills per set and hitting well north of .300. She’s also #2 in digs for the squad.

#2: Cambridge City Lincoln (7-1)

I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned the Golden Eagles in any previous article, so it’s nice to have new blood in the top five. Another solid schedule has CCL with an early conference lead, and should stay that way for the foreseeable future. Sophomore Macie Hawk (’24, 5-5 OH/MB) should not be underestimated. She may not sniff the front row in college, but her early returns are solid---three kills per set and attacking at an over .400 clip are impressive numbers for any size.

#1: Loogootee (6-2)

It’s not the record that puts the Lions here, it’s their tough schedule. Already owning wins over 4A teams like Terre Haute North, Greenwood and North Central (Indianapolis), Loogootee should be in the state championship discussion once again. [player_tooltip player_id="101318" first="Kylie" last="VanHoy"] (’22, 5-10 S/MB) will be setting at the next level, but don’t sleep on her offense. She’s in the top three for the Lions in kills (5.7/set), attack percentage (.431), aces (third), blocks (first), digs (third) and assists (second). I kind of expect her to lead in awesomeness too, but that goes without saying.
