The Spike Sport #1 was one of the first of those to take place. Played on December 4 in Missouri City, the event featured eight teams from the Houston area in the 17 Division and ten in the 18. The event was dominated by the traditional Houston Skyline club, which advanced two teams for the final of the gold bracket in both divisions.
PrepDig.com attended the tournament and we’ll use the next few days to highlight some of the most interesting players we spotted there – some are very popular and well-known names, while others are prospects who perhaps were flying under-the-radar.
These middle blockers showed a lot of potential in the 17 Division.
Sameena Burns Sameena Burns 6'2" | MB Seven Lakes | 2024 State TX – Skyline 16 Royal – HS: Seven Lakes – 2024
Sameena Burns Sameena Burns 6'2" | MB Seven Lakes | 2024 State TX ’ size and length make of her a dominant force at the net. Ranked 36th in our 2024 Prep Dig State Rankings and part of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Phenom List, she was an integral part of a strong Seven Lakes team during the last high school season. While her game is still developing in some aspects, she’s already really solid offensively and defensively at the net, having a very high efficiency rate when hitting and being able to take up a lot of space from opposing hitters with her big block. She’s in her first season with Skyline and couldn’t be in better hands to continue improving as a player.
Lyric Jordan – Skyline 17 Black – HS: Manvel – 2023
Versatility is a valuable asset in Lyric Jordan’s game as after helping her high school team Manvel make the trip to the State Tournament playing as an outside hitter, she switched to middle blocker with Skyline 17 Black. On the new position, the 6’1” Jordan can use more her physical tools, which include her superior athleticism and her long arms. Her contact point on offense is excellent and makes it harder for opponents to stop her, while her blocking is also very well-developed as she moves well at the net and does a great job in putting pressure with her hands.
Fiona Charlton – Hou Stars 17 Black – HS: Awty International – 2023
A multi-sport athlete (she also plays basketball and lacrosse) for her high school Awty International, Fiona Charlton brought an interesting presence at the net for Hou Stars 17 Black during the tournament. Her blocking is probably the most interesting aspect of her game as she manages to put her arms well across the net and really interfere on opposing hitters’ decisions. She also adds to the game in other areas with her great serve and good ball control.
