The Spike Sport #1 was one of the first of those to take place. Played on December 4 in Missouri City, the event featured eight teams from the Houston area in the 17 Division and ten in the 18. The event was dominated by the traditional Houston Skyline club, which advanced two teams for the final of the gold bracket in both divisions.
PrepDig.com attended the tournament and we’ll use the next few days to highlight some of the most interesting players we spotted there – some are very popular and well-known names, while others are prospects who perhaps were flying under-the-radar.
These setters did a great job working with their hitters in the 17 Division.
Erica Dellesky Erica Dellesky 5'10" | S Tompkins | 2024 State TX – Skyline 17 Black – HS: Tompkins – 2024
Erica Dellesky Erica Dellesky 5'10" | S Tompkins | 2024 State TX ‘s reliable hands are an asset for not only her Skyline 17 Black team, which she’s playing for a first season after coming from Houston Juniors (where she won a National Championship this past summer), but also to her high school Tompkins, where she registered 553 assists as a sophomore. Dellesky is extremely consistent with her sets and that seems to be a product of her mindset as nothing seems to bother her on a volleyball. Standing at 5’9”, she’s certainly no liability at the net and also adds a lot on the backcourt with her strong defensive game. She ranks 47th in our 2024 Prep Dig State Rankings.
Shea Stone – Katy United 17 Molten – HS: Fort Bend Christian – 2023
Consistency and reliability are also among Shea Stone’s main attributes. Fresh from helping her high school team Fort Bend Christian win their first TAPPS state title last month, the 5’8” Stone carried the good momentum to the tournament and did a great job in running Katy United 17 Molten’s offense. She’s extremely intelligent with her ball distribution and accurate with her sets, excelling in two of the most important things setters should do on a volleyball court. Stone, who already surpassed 1,000 assists in her high school career, is also an outstanding defender, adding to her team’s backcourt game as well.
Sydney Kyle – Texas Legacy 17 Adidas – HS: Tomball Memorial – 2023
An extremely technical player, Sydney Kyle does a great job in running a fast-paced and creative offense for Texas Legacy 17 Adidas. In a certain way, the 5’7” setter makes her team play at her own pace as her quickness on the court is one of her most remarkable traits as a player. It’s easy to tell Kyle’s volleyball IQ is very high based on the smart decisions she makes and she’s also an excellent defensive player, who can also be deployed as a defensive specialist if needed, and a dangerous server.
