We spent Sunday morning at the Houston Skyline club, which had six courts running non-stop with matches of the 15s division. We watched each of the 24 club teams that competed at the venue and are now coming back to provide our positional reports featuring the players that caught our attention.
In our last positional piece, we’ll highlight some of the exceptional defensive specialists we saw in action:
Sydney McKay Sydney McKay 5'8" | DS/L Bellville | 2025 State TX – HJV 15 Elite – HS: Belville – 2025
Sydney McKay Sydney McKay 5'8" | DS/L Bellville | 2025 State TX is one of the unsung heroes of her HJV 15 Elite team which is among the best in the country in their age group. This team has several hitters towering over six feet and needs reliable passing to exploit their potential to the fullest. That’s exactly what the 5’7” McKay delivers. Extremely reliable and consistent, she has quietly established herself as a key piece for the team. She’s also a very good server and gets to impact the game in that area as well.
Megan Morello – Houston Skyline 15 Royal – HS: St. John XXIII – 2025
Megan Morello is one of the players who do the heavy lifting on the backcourt so Skyline 15 Royal’s offensive stars can shine at the net. She typically replaces one of the team’s outside hitters in the back and significantly improves the team’s defensive game. The 5’5” Morello is an excellent passer and her consistency in that area of the game allows her team to run its fast-paced offensive system nearly the entire time.
Kennedy Vital – HJV 15 Premier – 2025
Kennedy Vital is one of those players who seem to always be one step ahead of the others on defense. She touches a lot of balls in the backcourt, and even she doesn’t, it’s clear that she managed to anticipate what was going to happen, showing her excellent reading of the game. She’s also very focused on her duties and is always in a position to cover her hitters at the net.
Sophia Owens – Katy United 15 Adidas – HS: Seven Lakes – 2025
Originally a setter, Sophia Owens has an excellent defensive game and is able to help on the backcourt too, something she did for Katy United 15 Adidas in the tournament. She first stood out for her serving skills and for being able to sustain some long runs from the service line, but quickly showed how she could also be important on passing defense with her great technique.
Logan Swan – TAV Houston 15 Adidas – 2025
Logan Swan’s excellent passing is a key component in TAV Houston 15 Adidas’ playing system. The defensive specialist does a great job in keeping things in place at the backcourt for the team and is very consistent and highly productive. Very fast and technical, she’s also an exceptional defender. Swan has a good personality as a teammate as she’s always very positive and supportive on the court.
Anna Solis – HJV Molten – 2025
Very quick on the backcourt, Anna Solis is an outstanding defender for her HJV 15 Molten team. She’s always chasing balls on the backcourt and also helps the team a lot with her good passing game. Solis seems to have a strong mindset when on the court as she’s not the type of player that gets frustrated with mistakes and quickly puts them behind her and moves on for the next play.
