We’ve added over twenty new recruits to the class of 2023 rankings, so it’s important to say what each bring to the table. Here are five new additions from five different clubs from around the state of Indiana that have made waves this spring.

[player_tooltip player_id="180114" first="Alana" last="Aucremanne"], 5-10 RS, Center Grove, Circle City

This long-and-lean lefty is just as effective on in-system swings as well as out-of-system attempts. Her transition is quick, she uses her length to block well and can defend in the back row on a moment’s notice. Her arms had me do a double-take recently---her wing span makes it look as if she’s over six feet in height. That kind of advantage is what drew me to adding her to this list.

[player_tooltip player_id="190155" first="Gabrielle" last="Piche"], 5-10 MB, Mooresville, Team Indiana

Currently an M2, Miss Piche can do a ton off of two feet and can hit all angles with all kinds of touch and accuracy. Her quick feet also allow her to defend from pin to pin with ease, and can also be faster than some of the lumbering and larger middles she faces. With that speed comes the aggression, which more than makes up for the apparent lack of size.

[player_tooltip player_id="190164" first="Liah" last="Ostrom"], 5-8 S, Homeschool, NIVA

Fully capable of running a fast offense as the five-one setter, Liah is already used to high-leverage matches, as her Goshen team won the Indiana Homeschool Championships recently. She’s great on her feet, knows the game, always finds the right hitter in the right situation, and never takes a play off. As the #1 setter for a solid 17 Purple (17-1) team at NIVA, she’s also traveled a lot to play even tougher competition, which includes the Windy City Qualifier in Chicago this coming weekend. See you there, Liah!

[player_tooltip player_id="190170" first="Maicee" last="Sterrett"], 5-5 DS/L, Frankfort, Boiler Juniors, committed to North Park

As a primary-passing, six-rotation outside for the Boiler Juniors 17-2 squad, Maicee is responsible for a ton. That probably explains why she’s committed already, as she can play a ton of different roles for them. She can play all the way around, be a three-rotation DS in any of the three back row spots and can also wear the special jersey in a pinch. It’s important to note that she’s been an OH for the great majority of her career, so when the fall of ’23 comes around, I expect her to be an important offensive cog for NP in practice.

[player_tooltip player_id="190175" first="Bella" last="Wynja"], 6-1 MB, Heritage Christian, Academy

Playing bigger than her frame suggests, Bella can be either the M1 or M2 at any time for Academy’s 17-1 squad. Her terminal abilities have improved so much that she’s gone from a 2s player at Academy last club season to a 1s player at the best team in the club this season in this author’s opinion. I like her quicker-than-average transition, her heavy attack and her abilities to go pin-to-pin to defend at the net consistently.
