It’s springtime and that means time for the JVA World Challenge to take over Louisville, KY! This year there are plenty of teams from the north making their way to the home of Churchill Downs. Here are some 2023s from Minnesota and Wisconsin that you will want to keep an eye on.

[player_tooltip player_id="73474" first="Hannah" last="Hanson"] – 2023 – 5’10 – Setter/Right Side Hitter – Rochester Mayo (MN) – SMV 17-1 Black

Hanson was identified early as a raw athlete and she has the vertical to go along with her quick-twitch reactions. She is strong, skilled, and can contribute in a number of ways. Hanson flourishes as a setter, but she can also score as a hitter on a variety of tempos as well as off one foot.

[player_tooltip player_id="151416" first="Jaelyn" last="Sivertson"] – 2023 – 5’7 – Libero/Pin Hitter – Iola-Scandanavia (WI) - Wisconsin Ice 17 National

Sivertson brings a level of grittiness to her teams with her quick-thinking and physical style of play. She is quick in reaction, transitions smoothly, and reads the other side of the net. Her vocal and energetic style of play energizes her team and pushes them to the finish line.

[player_tooltip player_id="86410" first="Katherine" last="Arnason"] – 2023 – 6’1 – Right Side Hitter – Mahtomedi (MN) – Kokoro 17-1s

Arneson is a long lefty with a super high contact point and physical style of play. She can attack at different tempos and use a sneaky shot to score if need be. Arneson is a recruit with a very high ceiling and will be a great add at the next level.

[player_tooltip player_id="73480" first="Maggie" last="Lile"] – 2023 – 5’6 – Libero – Spring Grove (MN) – SMV 17-1 Black

Lile provides stability with her ball control, defense, coverage, and clean and accurate distribution of the second contact when needed. She is part of a strong and experienced SMV 17-1 Black squad that has finished in the top 3 at the Frostbite Festival, JVA MKE Jamboree, Mizuno Uni-Dome JVA Challenge, and the Odd Cup. Lile has a strong skill foundation and she will be a key element to keep SMV competitive.

[player_tooltip player_id="86656" first="Paige" last="Decker"] – 2023 – 5’10 – Middle Blocker – Rochester Century (MN) – SMV 17-1 Black

Decker is sound, lively, and explosive out of the middle for SMV. She stands at 5’10 and can move well laterally at the net. Her defensive presence forces opponents to make errors and she’s steady and always working hard in transition.

[player_tooltip player_id="158967" first="Shannon" last="Rusch"] – 2023 – 5’9 – Right Side Hitter – Edgerton (WI)– Capital 17 Adidas

Rusch knows just how to take a fast swing on a tight set in order to beat the block and expose open court. She is dangerous on the pin for a skilled and smart Capital squad. Rusch can pound the split, or turn it down the line.

[player_tooltip player_id="92022" first="Taylor" last="Petersen"] – 2023 – 5’10 – Middle Blocker – River Falls (WI) – Kokoro 17-1s

Peterson runs fast routes and does a great job finding high hands. She is also quite good at tooling the block while running a slide and has been really picking up steam since the high school season after a trip to the state quarterfinals. Peterson trains year-round with high school teammates [player_tooltip player_id="92019" first="Morgan" last="Kealy"], [player_tooltip player_id="92023" first="Abi" last="Banitt"], and [player_tooltip player_id="92020" first="Brianna" last="Brathol"].
