The fourth weekend of the event reunited 40 teams in the 16s division and another 19 in the 18’s division. Competition took place in two different venues and we headed to the Texas Tornados club on Saturday, where 24 teams of the 16s division competed in the morning.
As usual, we’re presenting our positional breakdowns during the week and now it’s time we point out the liberos who stole the show in the event.
Olivia Murillo Olivia Murillo 5'7" | DS/L Klein Collins | 2024 TX – Texas Legacy 16 Elite – HS: Klein Collins – 2024
Olivia Murillo Olivia Murillo 5'7" | DS/L Klein Collins | 2024 TX formed a solid backcourt duo with Anahi Alvarado Anahi Alvarado 5'5" | DS/L Tomball Memorial | 2024 TX as the two flipped between libero and defensive specialist during the entire event. The 5’7” Murillo stood out for her quickness to react to unexpected plays and her unwavering focus and attention. She showed excellent ball control on defense and even when she had to dive to reach the ball, she’d deliver it exactly where it needed to be. A very good passer, Murillo didn’t see many serves going her way during the event.
Briana Galvan – Xcel VB 162 Elite – 2024
Briana Galvan caught our eye for her impressive passing ability. The diminutive Xcel VB 162 Elite was extremely precise with her deliveries, even when handling tough serves. She has a great reading of the game and several times was in the right place at the right time to play defense or cover a hitter. Galvan also seems to understand her backcourt general role pretty well as she’s always communicating with her teammates and organizing things.
Eden Fairfield – Catalyst 16 Green – HS: Foster – 2024
Eden Fairfield was one of the bright spots of her Catalyst 16 Green team. Very active on the backcourt, the libero was one of the best pure defenders to get on the court over the weekend as she not only displayed excellent positioning, but also great ball control, especially with some one-handed digs. Fairfield is also a solid passer and a reliable server.
Bea Angeles – Fr Challenge Elite 16 – Royal – HS: Manvel – 2024
The Friendswood Challenge Elite club always presents interesting defensive players and Bea Angles was the one to stand out this time. The 5’3” libero played lights out and kept her team in games despite several difficulties. Angeles is very quick and technical and seems to be very relaxed on the court. She’s an excellent passer, does a very good job in recovering balls and is also solid with her serving. Angeles was a defensive stud for a solid Manvel team this past high school season, leading them in digs (579) and passes (614).
Kieryn Adams – Texstar 16 – HS: Schulenburg – 2024
A dynamic and very technical libero, Kieryn Adams led Texstar 16’s backcourt efforts masterfully. The 5’3” defender is extremely skilled and keeps things under control on defense for her offensive-minded team. Adams is the kind of libero that generates a lot of confidence in her teammates because of her consistency and stability. She’s also an excellent server and can cause damage from the service line with her skilled left hand.
Cameron Steger – Texas Tornados 16 National – HS: Katy – 2024
Cameron Steger offered a reassuring presence for her Texas Tornados 16 National team on the backcourt. Very quick and technical, she showed great initiative to take responsibility for the team’s defensive game and delivered excellent performances with her skill set. Steger’s defining skill is her tremendous ball control, which also helps her when she’s asked to set in transition, but the 5’3” libero is also a very good server.
