The FAST Pre Nationals tournament has established itself as the final event in the Houston area ahead of the GJNC. This year, the tournament was held in three different venues this past weekend and offered a final opportunity for us to watch some of the best teams in the state before they had to Indiana to fight for the national title.
We were at the FAST Complex on Saturday afternoon watching the 16s and 17s Power Pools and this time will spend not one, but two weeks producing reports about the event. This week we’re focusing on the 16s division and now it’s time we highlight some of the excellent liberos who helped their teams.
Alice Volpe Alice Volpe 5'5" | DS/L Bridgeland | 2024 State #83 Nation TX – HJV 16 Elite – HS: Bridgeland – 2024
One of the most promising liberos in the entire state, Alice Volpe Alice Volpe 5'5" | DS/L Bridgeland | 2024 State #83 Nation TX has put on another backcourt masterclass this past weekend. Extremely technical, the 5’4” defender was nearly flawless, generating great volume for her HJV 16 Elite team on the defensive side of the game. Volpe thrives for her excellent positioning and ball control, but another thing that makes her so effective is her attention to detail. A libero that doesn’t make mistakes and makes her team better is what every coach wants and that’s exactly what they get in Volpe.
Carly Chavez Carly Chavez 5'7" | DS/L O'Connor | 2024 State TX – Alamo 16 Elite – HS: O’Connor – 2024
Another backcourt general who had excellent production at the FAST Complex, Carly Chavez Carly Chavez 5'7" | DS/L O'Connor | 2024 State TX was a stud for her Alamo 16 Elite team. Very dynamic and intelligent, the 5’7” libero did a great job in anticipating plays and getting on the ball to keep it up. Chavez is excellent with her positioning as it seems she’s got a magnet that attracts the ball in her direction wherever she is. Her ball control is also outstanding.

Kristen Kuehn Kristen Kuehn 5'7" | DS/L Brenham | 2024 State TX – Woodlands Revolution 16 Premier – HS: Brenham – 2024
Kristen Kuehn Kristen Kuehn 5'7" | DS/L Brenham | 2024 State TX proved to be one of the most important players in her Woodlands Revolution 16 Premier team. The 5’7” libero controlled the team’s backcourt in excellent fashion, coordinating her teammates and also getting great production herself. Kuehn reads the game really well, something that allows her to be one step ahead of everyone else most of the time. She also does a very good job in setting in transition when needed and is a dangerous server.
Jaylin Lott Jaylin Lott 5'4" | DS/L SA Clark | 2024 State TX – SA Juniors 16 Adidas – HS: Clark – 2024
The high-energy Jaylin Lott Jaylin Lott 5'4" | DS/L SA Clark | 2024 State TX did an excellent job at the backcourt of her SA Juniors 16 Adidas. She was electric on defense and was extremely productive with her great combination of skills and quickness. The 5’5” Lott was very fast to react to plays and did really well in keeping the ball up even in difficult conditions. Also a solid passer, she’s the kind of player that immediately puts a mistake behind her and focuses on the next play.
Sydney Black Sydney Black 5'6" | DS/L Fulshear | 2025 State #95 Nation TX – HJV 15 Elite – HS: Fulshear – 2025
Sydney Black Sydney Black 5'6" | DS/L Fulshear | 2025 State #95 Nation TX grew into a very big role with her offensive-minded HJV 15 Elite team because of her ability to keep things under control on the backcourt. The 5’7” libero seems to be always very calm on the court and is not the kind of player that will ever make consecutive mistakes. Black covers a lot of ground in serve-receiving and generates a lot of transition plays with her excellent ball control. She’s also a very efficient server.
Brooklyn Vigil – Alamo 15 Premier – HS: Harlan – 2025
Another class of 2025 libero who’s wise beyond her years and displayed excellent maturity over the weekend, Brooklyn Vigil was tremendous in leading Alamo 15 Premier’s backcourt game. The 5’6” libero is extremely reliable and efficient and it’s easy to see that her ability to get the job done on the backcourt gives the team a lot of confidence. Vigil is particularly impressive with her passing, which is as accurate as it gets.
