One of them was the Katy ISD/Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Varsity Tournament, which reunited as many as 48 teams from the Houston area and beyond for three days of competition across eight high schools in the region between Thursday and Saturday.
I was at the Katy Taylor and the Cinco Ranch high schools on the opening day and watched the matches at Tompkins on Friday, being able to see in person 22 different teams across the two days. During the week, I’ll share the positional top performers from the teams I was fortunate to watch, starting with the setters.
Presley Powell

Tournament winners Tompkins had talent all around their squad and the setter position was no exception with Powell. A setter that combines good length, a high volleyball IQ and impressive consistency, she did a great job in getting the most of her strong group of hitters, earning an all-tournament team selection after she produced 95 assists across eight matches. Powell is also very effective with her blocking and her defense.
Molly Harris

The 5’7” Harris stood out by finding simple solutions to make her team thrive offensively. She’s not the type of setter that will wow people watching with an unpredictable move, but is one that will keep her team ticking with her consistency and her ability to make good decisions even during the most complicated moments of matches. Harris is also a very good server and helps College Park form the service line too.
The 5’8” Hoss was one of the most impressive players of a Jordan team that ranked 17th with four wins and four losses. Very technical and creative, she ran the team’s offensive intelligently, making great use of her precision and consistency. She can also be a threat with her setter dumps that keep opposing blockers and defenders on her toes all match. Also a very good server, a solid defender and a vocal leader, Hoss has the complete package.

A setter with excellent physical and technical tools, the 6’1” Blaine is also the great player she is because of her mental strength. As a setter, she needs to deal with a lot of pressure on the court, but nothing really seems to bother her, who just keeps playing her excellent game regardless of what’s going on. Blaine is also very clean on the ball and distributes it among her hitters really well. She also does an excellent job when it comes to using her size to impact the game at the net, be it with her blocking or setter dumps.

Syndi Halfmann
Syndi Halfmann
Halfmann wasn’t Tomball Memorial’s first-choice setter entering the tournament but she certainly left a good impression with her performances. Every time she was subbed in, the 5’7” playmaker brought new energy to the game and modified the team’s playing system, running a fast-paced offense with extreme efficiency. She can also make an impact on the backcourt and had 65 assists and 24 digs in just six matches.
