We are, as usual, centering our coverage around promoting the most intriguing prospects around the state with articles that will highlight their standout performances and statistical milestones and also team features.
As much as possible, we’ll also try to every Tuesday and Friday preview an interesting match that’s set to happen around the state, pointing out the most impressive prospects that will be on the court in that encounter. Our focus on Tuesday, August 23, will be on the matchup between the New Braunfels Unicorns (11-8) and the Gregory-Portland Wildcats (8-11), which will face each other at 6.30 PM in Northeast San Antonio.
New Braunfels
Ella Vajdos
Ella Vajdos
The explosive Vajdos has been a key player for the Unicorns in her senior season. The 5’9″ outside hitter is also a track student-athlete and has been using her physicality extremely well to make a difference at the net. Vajdos is also very sound technically and gets things done on the backcourt too. She currently leads the team in kills (107) and passes (214) and ranks second in digs (122).
Maddie O’Gorman
Maddie O’Gorman
An athletic and dynamic presence in the middle, O’Gorman is also up to a great start of the season. The six-footer currently leads the Unicorns in blocks (27) and aces (37) and ranks second in kills (100). She’s a very good blocker because of her long frame and excellent timing at the net and has a well-developed offensive game, being able to hit a variety of different sets with considerable power.
The 5’9″ Rush plays a double role for New Braunfels, taking up setting and hitting duties with the team. One of the team leaders, she’s a very capable and intelligent server, having tallied nearly 900 assists in her high school career. Despite not being extremely tall, she’s very physical and aggressive with her offense and knows how to find a good balance between that and her technical skills when she goes up to hit. Rush has produced 232 assists and 68 digs so far in the season.

Kiera Vest
Capable of playing in the middle or at the pin, Vest is using his physicality to thrive as an outside hitter in her senior season. Very long and explosive, she has been a consistent producer for the Wildcats so far in the season, leading the entire squad in kills (187) and ranking second in digs (168) and aces (11) and third in passes (213).
Madison Kilgore
Madison Kilgore
Kilgore plays the other outside hitter position for the Wildcats and has also been tremendously important for the team in their campaign. An all-around player, she’s equally effective in handling her defensive duties with the team and helping with the offense at the net. The 5’10” Kilgore ranks second in kills (168) and passes (222) and third in digs (154) and aces (11). She’s a multi-sport student-athlete who also plays basketball, soccer and track.
Ashlyn Kelly
Ashlyn Kelly
Kelly has won the starting spot this season and is showing she’s capable to lead the team on the court and run an effective offense. She’s very calm on the ball and does a very good job in setting her hitters up at the net consistently. Her size also makes of her a nice piece to have at the net. Kelly has already registered 434 assists, 132 digs and 27 kills in the Wildcats’ campaign.
