We are, as usual, centering our coverage around promoting the most intriguing prospects around the state with articles that will highlight their standout performances and statistical milestones and also team features.
As the season enters its final stage, we’ll continue to preview some of the most interesting matches that are set to happen around the state, pointing out the most impressive prospects that will be on the court in that encounter. Among the several non-conference matches set to take place on Friday, October 28, the one reuniting the Clear Creek Wildcats (25-17) and the Manvel Mavericks (29-10) stands out as one of the most intriguing ones.
The Wildcats (9-3) made it to the playoffs by ranking second in Conference 6A – District 24 while the Mavericks went undefeated (12-0) to top Conference 5A – District 18. The teams also met in their first match in the season, back in August, with Clear Creek pulling out a five-set victory.
Clear Creek
Olivia Jones
Olivia Jones
A well-rounded outside hitter, Jones stepped up in just her second season of high school volleyball to become a key player for a solid Clear Creek team. Very active and productive on both sides of the ball, she has been putting on excellent numbers in a variety of areas of the game. Jones is the Wildcats’ leading scorer with 423 kills but is also well-ranked when it comes to serve-receive (third, with 392 passes) and defense (fifth, with 235 digs).
Clear Creek’s dynamic middle has been tremendously productive in her junior season. Extremely athletic, she’s been able to battle every middle she gets to face and to win most of these encounters with her strong play. Herrin has been a stud for the Wildcats with her blocking, the best in the team with 93 stuffs, and is also extremely valuable on offense, with the team’s second-best mark of 312 kills, and from the service line, with 21 aces (third in the squad).
Highlights
Mia Sauers
Mia Sauers
A vastly productive player during her entire high school career, Sauers has proven even more valuable for the Wildcats in her senior season. She’s been playing a big role in the team’s serve-receive system and also using her quickness and skills to generate multiple transition opportunities for her team. Sauers leads Clear Creek in digs (731), passes (908) and also in aces (54).
Manvel
An extremely talented offensive player, Lewis has developed other areas of the game and became one of the most complete players in her class. Originally a middle, she’s been playing as an outside hitter for Manvel, a position in which she can still hit the ball hard, but also help with her blocking and on the backcourt. Lewis leads the Mavericks in aces (96) and ranks second in kills (451), digs (345) and passes (441).
One of the most talented setters in her class in the entire state, Massie managed to build from an already stellar freshman campaign this season. The size and the skill have always been there, but she’s now more consistent and has a better understanding of the game, which leads to better decisions when feeding her hitters. Massie has tallied 887 assists so far this season and has also produced 64 aces and 264 digs, ranking second and third in those skills.
A long and athletic pin hitter, Jordan has been leading the Mavericks’ offense with her excellent attacking skills. But perhaps the most noticeable growth in her game came on the backcourt as she’s now also a capable offensive player. Jordan has been huge at the net, leading Manvel in kills (469) and ranking third in blocks (55), but her backcourt production has also been valuable as she’s the team’s fourth-best passer (192) and fifth-best defender (161).
