Everyone is taking a little break for the holidays and will get back to full power on the first weekend of January, so we’re taking the week to feature some of the 18s teams from the Houston area that we believe have the potential to make really good things over the next few months.
Texas Legacy 18 Elite
The top team of the club located in Tomball has had two important additions heading into the season with outside hitter Ariana Brown Ariana Brown 5'11" | OH Conroe | 2023 State TX and middle blocker Mikala Sampson Mikala Sampson 6'1" | MB Klein | 2023 State #109 Nation TX joining from Willowbrook. Legacy also have an incredibly talented setter in Savannah Jennings Savannah Jennings 5'10" | S Rosehill Christian | 2023 State TX and a solid libero in Kylie Bray. They were fifth in the FAST Warm Up.
Key Players
One of the most explosive and powerful offensive players in the entire state, Brown immediately became the team’s go-to scoring option. Nicknamed “The Texas Hammer”, she can challenge any blocker standing across the net and had endless energy on the court. Brown has also considerably improved her technical skills over the last two years and is now a very reliable passer and a player who can score with finesse and smart plays as well. She’s the one who will get set when matches are on the line and you can bet she’ll come swinging hard.
Jennings is one of the most talented and smoothest setters in her class and the fact she has an incredibly strong group of hitters to work with this season should only make her better. She’s extremely cerebral, has great decision-making and is consistently accurate, even when she jump sets and accelerates the game. With her good size, Jennings is also very strong at the net and plays excellent defense on the backcourt.
Kylie Bray
Kylie Bray
Texas Legacy 18’s offense wouldn’t be the same without Bray’s contributions on the backcourt. A fantastic passer, she gets the team going with her always-precise first contact. Bray does an excellent job in always putting her body behind the ball and that hugely limits her mistakes. She’s also very good with her defense, placing herself in good spots and displaying excellent ball control. One underrated aspect of her game is perhaps her ability to set in transition. She also serves very well.
Sampson’s arrival has provided Texas Legacy 18 Elite with a much-needed and invaluable presence in the middle. A very dynamic and physical prospect, she knows how to make her presence felt on both sides of the ball at the net. Sampson does an excellent job with her blocking and is able to get off the floor really quickly, often surprising opposing hitters who think she’s late. Her athleticism also comes in handy offensively as she uses her excellent footwork to make herself available very often while also making contact with the ball at a very high point.
Alexis Bodunrin
Alexis Bodunrin
Many may consider Bodunrin a little bit undersized, but she certainly plays right up there with the best outside hitters. Her incredible vertical is her main asset on the court and puts her in a position to side out in any situation. Bodunrin is also very quick and resourceful with her offense and is really difficult to defend thanks to her unpredictability. She’s also a solid backcourt player, who contributes with her passing and defense.
