With 2023 on the horizon, and 2022 nearing a close, it's time to take a look at some of the best this past year.

Starting off in the Thumb of the Mitten state. Producing two teams to make it all the way to Kellogg and the second straight year having a team return as state champions is impressive. And there's a lot more where that came from.

Breaking down some of the best of the best from the Thumb area. Here were some of the top setters in 2022.

[player_tooltip player_id='110302' first='Adrienne' last='Greschaw'] - 5'8 S - North Branch

Leading the charge to North Branch's first state title since 2016, [player_tooltip player_id='110302' first='Adrienne' last='Greschaw'] was the glue to this Bronco offense. In her third season running the offense, Greschaw's game has grown exponentially since she's taken over. For the second straight season, Greschaw amassed over 1200 assists.

[player_tooltip player_id='172190' first='Jerzie' last='Vanochten'] - 5'6 S/UT - Reese

Throw her in whatever position you need and she'll deliver. While she didn't take over the setting duties until midway through the season, [player_tooltip player_id='172190' first='Jerzie' last='Vanochten']'s impact was huge. With her experience in multiple positions, her IQ for the game proved a big game changer for the Rockets when they needed it most.

[player_tooltip player_id='490335' first='Makayla' last='Bruman'] - 5'9 S - Imlay City

Not very often you see a freshman take over the reigns of the offense and deliver so strongly. [player_tooltip player_id='490335' first='Makayla' last='Bruman'] alongside her freshmen duo, [player_tooltip player_id='226904' first='Emma' last='Keeping'], are looking to be the power duo of the area for years to come. While so young, Bruman has proved to play years beyond her age and will continue to impress.

[player_tooltip player_id='172194' first='Saylar' last='Cuthrell'] - 5'4 S - Cass City

While her athletic career will take her to the softball fields of Northwood University, [player_tooltip player_id='172194' first='Saylar' last='Cuthrell'] had some unfinished business to do on the volleyball court. After leading her team to a regional final match in her junior campaign, losing by a mere three points in the fifth. Cuthrell stepped up her game for her senior season and led the Hawks to their first Semi-Final match since 1977.

[player_tooltip player_id='473954' first='Ava' last='Barnes'] - 5'9 S - Brown City/Legacy

It's been a minute since we've heard from Brown City, but with a setter like [player_tooltip player_id='473954' first='Ava' last='Barnes'], I am sure we will be hearing more from the Green Devils for years to come. It goes with the saying, "a setter can make or break a team". With Barnes running the show, she's brought back the Green Devils into the volleyball conversation.
