Continue ReadingClub season has begun and The Southern California Volleyball Association (SCVA) has two divisions, Power and Elite. Through the Entry Tournament is how teams make the Power Division. Both divisions bring about competitive game play and a chance to see some hidden gems on the court. It was the first time seeing some teams shake hands before and after a game. A show of sportsmanship that was taken away because of Covid-19. It’s nice to see the game getting back to normalcy. Player, position spotlight will be a series to highlight prospects and introduce players to fans. Introducing six players below whose contribution to their team will allow for a stellar season.
Brooke Hansen Brooke Hansen 6’0″ | S Etiwanda | 2025 State #135 Nation CA is a talented athlete who is a setter and right-side hitter. She has the speed and agility to get to a ball in her setter position and the power and force to kill a ball playing opposite. She is a smart player who utilizes her teammates, spreading the ball around so the plays are not always predictable. Hansen also has the height to get blocks at the net and is not afraid to joust her opponent for a point. As a setter, she runs the plays, is vocal on the court, and can transition quickly for things to happen. On the right side, she can serve receive, has a fast approach and can score. Those attributes is what put Hansen in the spotlight.

Saniyah Sobers Saniyah Sobers 5’6″ | DS/L Redlands | 2025 State CA is a beast on defense and covers the back row like a boss. She doesn’t hesitate and reacts with speed. She is quick to a ball and has no fear of diving or rolling on the court. She will pop right back up and doesn’t miss a beat of the play. If the setter is unable to get the pass, Sobers gets to the second ball and can bump set it on point to her pins. She has a serve that tends to knock her opponents out of system. Gathering a couple of aces each set. Her hustle on the court put her in the spotlight to be recognized. She plays great under pressure and is fun to watch.
Highlights
Lilliana Montes
Lilliana Montes
Lilliana Montes utilizes her height at the net, making her a standout in her position. High hands above the net make it easy for her to get the job done. Standing at 6’4, Montes’ height can be intimidating to many players who stand in front of her. She capitalizes off of quick short sets by killing it straight down in front of the ten-foot line. Those types of hits from her are hard to dig because of the speed and force behind her swing. Montes is a player to keep an eye on.
Mae Kordas
Mae Kordas
Mae Kordas was playing right side when I watched her play but she is listed as an outside hitter. With her ability and strong swing, she can play both positions with ease. Knowing the job of other positions is usually beneficial to a team when they need a player to step up. Kordas’ quick approach, high jump, and force behind a ball can split or tool a block. On defense, she protects the net with high hands and on offense she can roll shot, kill it or make a smart play with a tip in an open spot. Keeping Kordas under the radar.
Simone Rolson
Simone Rolson
It’s hard to believe that Simone Rolson is a freshman because of how she plays on the court. She steps in and handles gameplay with confidence and maturity. She is a reliable passer who can efficiently serve receive. Rolson is a smart player who can consistently score because she reads the court and finds the open spots. She has a strong hit that can get over the block or she can place it down line. She has great timing with her jumps that allow her to get on top of the ball. With the talent she displays already, I can only imagine her growth in the next three years. Rolson is a key team player who deserves to be in the spotlight.
Kenidee Wax
Kenidee Wax
Kenidee Wax is another dual player who steps in as a setter and right side hitter. When I watched her, she was all over the court getting second ball. Her speed allowed her to get there even with off passes she was able to turn a play. She has hot hands that deliver smooth sets, creating hittable balls. When playing right side, Wax was scoring and capable of creating a wall to block. She can pass from back row and knows how to cover the short serves. The spotlight is shinning on Wax because of her skills on offense and defense.
