Although the Tour of Texas Qualifier held in Austin was hands down the highlight of the weekend, the Houston area also had some really good competition at the H-Town Showdown #1, a tournament that reunited 100 teams from three different age groups across three venues in the area.
I was at the Texas Tornados club on Saturday afternoon following the two top brackets of the 18s Division and got to see some familiar faces confirm my thoughts about them and several new ones make a strong impression. I’ve been featuring five players in each position who were in top form on Saturday during the week and now we’ll focus on the right side hitters.
After spending the entire high school season playing as an outside hitter for Travis, Williams moved to the right to play for HJV 18 Premier and didn’t miss a step. Her offense looks sharper than ever as, although Williams remains a powerful hitter, she mixes things up well, going with some tips and roll shots occasionally. Because of her time as an outside hitter, she can also pass and play defense, adding an interesting level of tactical flexibility to her game.
Kamryn Phillips
Kamryn Phillips
A middle blocker earlier in her career, Phillips has developed into a solid right side hitter, adding a variety of skills to her game. The Houston Skyline BCS 18 Royal prospect uses her length and power extremely well on offense, but she also has great court vision and is great at finding open spots. Very versatile, she can swing at a very high level from the right, the middle, the left and even the backcourt. Phillips is a very complete and, besides blocking very well, is also proficient with her passing.
Medina was playing one age group up with TAV Houston 18 Molten but it barely seemed so. The lefty was a stud on the right for her team, siding out with great efficiency, especially at the later portion of sets. She’s a very versatile offensive player, who can hit quicker or higher sets and had a variety of resources to put the ball down at the net. She’s a solid blocker too, using her length to press opposing hitters across the net.
Highlights
haley De Hoyos

One of the most physical players in the division, De Hoyos did a very good job playing on the right for AVA TX 18 Power. She used her size and power to score points and was really difficult to stop because of her high contact point. De Hoyos also displayed some good resources to score off tips when dealing with difficult sets. She also impressed with her blocking, combining excellent reach and great timing.
Leah Fudge
Leah Fudge
Fudge is a creative offensive player who finds ways to score for Asics Willowbrook 18 Red despite not being extremely tall. She jumps well and makes good hand contact with the ball, hitting it with impressive precision. Fudge has great variation with her shots and that gives her the ability to score even she doesn’t have the time to make a full offensive approach. She also plays good defense.
