Most of the top prospects in the region will be on the court and we’ll use the week to highlight some of the most promising players who will be battling in the Alamo City over the weekend. Here are five setters worth watching:
One of the top players in the entire state according to our Prep Dig State Rankings, Anderson will be with Alamo 18 Premier in the 17-18 Girls Division. She’s a very complete player, who checks every box and then some more when you think of an elite setter. Anderson is excellent with her ball handling and very intelligent with her distribution, but also uses her athleticism to impact the game when at the net. She’s capable of taking up hitting duties (and is very good at it) and is also a very solid blocker, who creates problems for opposing outside hitters. Anderson also plays outstanding defense and is very smooth with every aspect of her game.
Burton is another setter with good size and a very complete game who will be competing in the 17-18 Girls Division – she plays for SA Juniors 17 Adidas. The consistency of her locations is one of Burton’s main strengths as she uses her clean touch on the ball to repeatedly send the ball to the same spot. Her distribution is also really good as she typically keeps most of her hitters involved whenever possible. Burton is also well above average when working with passes off the net and helps with defense.

Hawkins and her Alamo 17 Premier team will also be competing in the 17-18 Girls Division over the weekend. She shares the setting duties in the team with Gabriella Reeves Gabriella Reeves 5’7″ | S Antonian College Preparatory | 2024 State TX , giving Alamo two interesting options to run the offense. Hawkins, who’s coming from a stellar high school season with Canyon, is very dynamic on the court and very complete as well. Besides contributing with her playmaking, she also makes a big impact with her defense from the right back position and her serving ability.
Lyssy has emerged as a promising setter in the area and will represent SA Magic 16 Elite in the 17-18 Girls Division. She has excellent ball control and is great at moving to the ball when setting, a combination that gives her the ability to consistently set well. Her technical gesture when setting shows how well-trained she’s been Lyssy is also capable of causing great impact on defense, most notably because of her excellent reading and positioning.
Highlights
A national champion last season, Thiele is now a key player in the Alamo 16 Premier that will play in the 17-18 Girls Divisions. It will be a great opportunity to see how she responds to playing against older competition, but odds are she’ll be just fine. Thiele is a very skilled setter and one of the things that make of her a special player is her ability to repeat locations while setting from anywhere on the court. Besides her excellent range, Thiele is also very versatile, being able to play at the net and cause an impact there with her ability to hit and block.
