Continue ReadingLiberos usually receive the first touch of the volleyball so their passing and defensive skills should be very good. Setters usually get the second ball passed so they can set their hitters. If another player passes, the libero is expected to get the second ball and bump set one of the pins. Although we see many times in games the usual doesn’t always happen and the setter or libero has to make quick decisions to make a play. If a setter can’t get the ball, the libero will back them up. A good pass is needed to produce a good set, which makes liberos and setters work together. Introducing below, four liberos and two setters who help their teams on the court create good games.
Avalon Heintz
Avalon Heintz
Avalon Heintz knows how to get pancakes on the court because she’s so quick to the ball. Putting her hand between the ball and the floor saves points from being scored. I just so happened to catch her in action this game. She has a nice strong platform with controlled passing. Heintz knows her place on the court by covering her pins on defense, ready for the attack or ready to make a play. She is a great defensive player who reacts quickly to kills coming her way or tips over the net. Her speed and agility to transition quickly help her with excellent court coverage. Heintz is a player to keep an eye on.
Mahala Huntsman
Mahala Huntsman
Mahala Huntsman is a setter and right-side hitter who appears to play well under pressure. She knows how to spread the ball around to her hitters, left, right, or pipe. She can read the court and react by doing a setter’s dump when the area on the court is wide open. On the right side, Huntsman uses her strength to kill a ball and her high hands to block at the net. If her hit gets blocked, she knows how to react and passes it back up so a play can be made. She has the power to push the ball cross-court and on target to her outside pin. It was fun watching her play both positions.
Kayla Ostovar Kayla Ostovar 5’6″ | DS/L Mater Dei | 2025 State CA is a libero who is always ready for anything coming her way. She is quick on her feet and has no fear of diving to dig for a ball. Her stance is ready, her platform is flat which helps her passes be controlled and consistent. Ostovar covers her hitters and can pop up an attack on point to the setter. She is a great defensive player who is fierce at covering the back row. She is also a great server, finding her targets on the opposite side and getting them out of system. Ostovar is a libero to keep an eye on this season.
Highlights
Sydney Raszewski
Sydney Raszewski
Sydney Raszewski is a leader on the court in her libero position. She communicates well and takes control of the defense. She is ready for anything that comes her way. She covers the court, her area, and her hitters in anticipation of a kill, free ball, or tip. Raszewski knows how to get under a ball and her bump set will deliver it on target. When she dives for a ball, she’s back on her feet with quickness and back in the game without missing a beat. She has the speed and agility required for the libero position and she utilizes both which makes her a libero to be watched.
Jolyna Salas
Jolyna Salas
Jolyna Salas uses her smooth hands and soft touch to set hittable balls to her pins. She has a nice pushout cross-court and back set that falls on target. Her fast, quick, short set to the middle places the ball right above the tape so it can be hit straight down. She gets to the passes that don’t come straight to her and can turn a play into a point by adjusting her set. She passes the ball around and can transition the set to beat the blockers at the net. It was fun watching Salas play.
Paulina Baillier
Paulina Baillier
Paulina Baillier is a hustler on the court going after free balls and kills to stop the other team from scoring. She was all over the court defending back row. She didn’t hesitate to get on the floor and make a play. She goes after free balls, off passes, tips, and more in her defensive position. She saved quite a few balls that looked unsavable. Baillier makes a tough position look easy by how she digs and passes the ball with ease. She is another player who is fun to watch play.
