Some liberos react. This group anticipates. Ahead of the SoCal Freshman Showcase at Momentous Sports Center, seven incoming freshman liberos and defensive specialists talked about the game less like reflex and more like reading, watching a hitter's hand before contact, scanning the other side of the net before the swing even happens.

Here's who they are, and how they see the court.

Alison Tam brings a poise to serve receive that lets her teammates trust she'll take care of her responsibilities every time, and in defense, her ability to read hitters combined with a relentless pursuit of every ball allows her to cover an enormous amount of court. What separates her, though, is the mindset underneath the skill. Tam plays out of gratitude, a lens she says helps her stay present, recover from mistakes quickly, and play with joy rather than pressure. The advice that reshaped her game came the day before nationals, when her trainer told her simply to "play like a dominant libero." It wasn't technical, but it changed how she approached every touch, and her team went on to win a national championship.

During her freshman season at Marymount, Tam is focused on building her athleticism through weight training and conditioning while learning to balance a higher level of volleyball with harder academics, with an eye on a high-academic college down the road. She shows up for her teammates by staying calm under pressure, believing that when she stays loose, the people around her feel more stable too, and she wanted to be part of the Freshman Showcase to compete against talented players from across the region and show leadership through communication.

Anika Watts wants a college coach to notice her leadership and her communication, specifically how she directs her teammates through both offensive and defensive plays at Palos Verdes. A piece of coaching feedback changed how she processes mistakes. She used to get stuck in her head after an error, replaying what she could have done differently, but she has since built what she calls a "next ball" mentality, one that lets her stay confident and move on quickly rather than letting one play bleed into the next.

Watts is excited to start her freshman season playing with and against elite competition, and what keeps her motivated is the chance to be coached by people who can help her grow. She's looking for a highly competitive program that is also team and family oriented, somewhere she can continue developing as a player. She shows up for her teammates by encouraging them, keeping the energy high, and leading by example, and she wanted to be part of this showcase because she loves competing and wanted to keep growing as a volleyball player while gaining real exposure.

Isabella Morales has a specific skill she wants coaches to notice, the ability to not fold under pressure. She describes going back to the service line while the other team sits at game point and serving exactly like she always does, and she wants to be known as the player her teammates and coaches can rely on when it matters most. A piece of coaching feedback pushed her to become more outspoken. She was told to never forget who she is and to always present herself at a high level, to never be scared of an opponent, and that shift took her from being a bit timid to someone who watches everything her teammates are doing and takes real ownership on the court.

Morales is motivated by a genuine desire to win, and she's excited to represent her school and show the athlete she's becoming. Her goals for her freshman debut are simple, get on the court, get real experience, and be seen, and while she isn't certain yet what kind of program fits her long term, she knows she wants strong academics paired with the chance to keep playing.

Jolene Lee reads the game at a level that goes beyond most liberos her age. As she describes it, she watches the hitter's hand to anticipate a tip or a line shot, then calls it out so her teammates know before the ball arrives, while also scanning the other side of the court to flag any open shots for her hitters. Lee is motivated by the fact that she'll have to fight for her spot playing against and alongside older girls, and she's embracing that challenge heading into her freshman season.

A coaching adjustment changed her passing significantly. She was told to relax and take the ball off her midline, so she started loosening her arms, letting them hang, and tracking the ball to pass it outside her body, which created more space to work with. Her goals include building strength and bringing good energy to the court, and she's looking for an athletic college program that balances high-level volleyball with real academics. She shows up for teammates by bringing energy and celebrating every point, and she makes a point of checking in with anyone who's feeling down or dealing with an injury. Lee wanted to be part of this showcase for the exposure and the chance to play alongside talented athletes from across the region.

Katie Ha describes herself as a relentless defender who never gives up on a ball, and she leans on her communication, hustle, and ability to read hitters to keep plays alive and help her team stay organized. She wants college coaches to notice her energy, her consistency, and a team-first mindset that shows up on every point. A piece of feedback about her platform changed how consistent she is as a passer. She learned to keep her platform steady and angled toward her target instead of letting it get too flat or too high, and to move her feet to get behind the ball rather than reaching for it, giving her more control over the first contact.

Ha, who isn't playing club this season, is excited to compete at a higher level in high school and continue growing as a libero, and what motivates her is knowing that every practice brings her one step closer to playing in college. She's looking for a program that feels like a family, one that values both academics and athletics while still pushing her to compete.

Megan Yuen calls her volleyball IQ her biggest strength, along with her ability to stay calm and make good decisions in fast-paced situations. She takes pride in reading the court, identifying an opponent's weaknesses, and helping her teammates succeed in ways that go beyond her own stat line. A coaching adjustment reshaped how she plays defense entirely. She learned to trust her ability to read the game instead of simply reacting, paying attention to hitter tendencies and anticipating where the ball might go before it's even hit, and that shift taught her that good defense starts before contact, not after it.

Yuen is motivated by watching things that once seemed impossible become possible through consistent hard work, and she's heading into her freshman season at Eleanor Roosevelt eager to keep building that mindset. She's targeting a college program that values both academics and athletics, somewhere team-oriented and coachable, with an eventual goal of playing Division I volleyball. She shows up for teammates by staying calm and focusing on what the team needs in the moment, and she wanted to be part of the Freshman Showcase to keep growing as a defensive player and sharpen her volleyball IQ against strong competition.

Stella Rose was gifted with natural ball control, and it shows up clearly in her serve receive and defense, but what she wants a college coach to notice most is her leadership on the court and the smart decisions she makes under pressure. A piece of coaching feedback changed how quickly she reacts to the ball. She was told to track the ball with her eyes, especially in serve receive, and that adjustment helped her recognize sooner whether a ball was dropping short or driving deep.

Rose is motivated by the desire to be the best leader on the court and to be someone her teammates know they can count on, and she's looking forward to learning what it means to compete against girls her age and older. Her goals for this season go beyond volleyball, she wants to grow as a person and truly learn what it means to be mentally tough, and she's still open to where her college path leads. She shows up for teammates with a strong mindset and a tough mentality, making sure she's always encouraging and the loudest cheerer on the court.
