Highlighted with some promising talent from around the state, Five:1 has already picked up some nice wins over talented teams in the Great Lakes area.
Here’s a look at what the club is brining to the floor for the 17s in 2023.
Five:1 17 Black
Dallas Wimbrow is coaching this squad, which brings in a nice mixture of size and speed.
This year’s team will feature Pewamo-Westphalia setter Taylor Smith Taylor Smith 6'1" | S Pewamo Westphalia | 2024 State MI , who is coming off a big 2022 fall season. The 6’1” Smith led the Pirates to a Division 3 state championship while receiving our Player of the Year honor in D3.
Smith has all the tools to excel on the club level, and she works with some standout hitters in this Five:1 club.
In the middle, Smith has 6’1” Jasa Ross, 6-foot Rylie Priest Rylie Priest 5'9" | MB St. Johns | 2024 State MI and 5’11” Emerson Baum Emerson Baum 6'0" | MB Howell | 2024 State MI to work with. The three all have good instincts on the court and are getting the best brought out of them by Smith’s setting.
On the outside, Hadley Krygier and Emerson Seog are two six-rotation talents. Krygier has a lot of power in her swing, while also having the quickness to be a defensive standout. Seog also has been a consistent finisher that brings a strong serve to the court as well. Sienna Sahr and Paige Bakker will be compliments on the right side, while Sahr can also play on the outside when needed.
Defensively, Five:1 17 Black has Faith Martin and Lexi Fetters handling the back row responsibilities. Both are tireless players that can be unsung heroes for this squad. They have the ability to get to a lot of balls and keep Smith running the offense in-system.
Five:1 opened up its season at the JVA Rock ‘N Rumble and didn’t shy from competition. They played in the 17 Open and finished 19th overall, but won the Copper bracket with a pair of nice victories.
That was followed up by a 3-3 showing in the 17 Premier Division of the Central Zone Invitational in Indianapolis at the end of January. That placed Five:1 15th for the division.
Next up will be the President’s Day Weekend Battle of the Ohio Valley in Sandusky this upcoming weekend. It will be a chance for Five:1 to show its growth over the last three weeks and prove it can pick up wins over some of the regions top teams.
