Continue ReadingThe USAV National Bid tournament for the CEVA region was this past weekend, so high-level volleyball 12U through 18U took place all over Oregon. Due to the size of the CEVA region, the 18U age division was allotted three bids: a National Bid to the 1st place team, an American Bid to the 2nd place team, and a Freedom Bid to the 3rd place team. With eight teams vying for three bids, the competition was tough, but three teams prevailed and will be heading to the 2023 Girls Junior National Championship in Columbus, OH.
The following teams from the CEVA region competed in the 18U Bid Tournament:
- Aspire NW 18-1 Empire
- Athena VB 18-1 Gold
- Athena VB 18-2 Black
- NPJ 18 Forefront
- NPJ Salem 18 National
- OJVA 18-1 Gold
- Rise MFR 18 National
- Webfoot 18-Elite
And the teams headed to Chicago are:
NATIONAL BID – NPJ 18 Forefront
The incredibly stacked NPJ 18 Forefront team dominated at the Bid tournament, walking away with the National bid. Though after competing and doing very well in the NIT Power Pools earlier this year, the group has their sights set on an Open bid, knowing they can battle with the best of the best. Running a 5-1 primarily with Washington commit Alexis Haury Alexis Haury 5'10" | S Silverton | 2024 State #9 Nation OR , she ran a fast offense and fed the dominant pins. On the outside, two complete six-rotation hitters, Alexandra Acevedo (Oregon commit) and Kyleene Filimaua Kyleene Filimaua 6'1" | OH North Creek | 2023 State #185 Nation WA (Florida State commit), proved hard to stop. On the right side, Naima Foster Naima Foster 5'10" | OH Valley Catholic | 2023 State OR (Seattle University commit) has bounced back impressively from an ankle injury. Also, in the right side rotation, depending on the match, leftie Bridget Gould Bridget Gould 5'11" | RS Marshfield | 2024 State OR (Oregon commit). Leading the teams back row as their libero, Kennedy Cheung Kennedy Cheung 5'2" | DS/L Westview | 2023 State OR , who recently committed to the University of Chicago. Also seeing some court time across the back row, Boise State commit Kayleigh Carpenter Kayleigh Carpenter 5'9" | OH South Salem | 2023 State #146 Nation OR , an outside hitter turned defensive specialist. In the middle, Arizona State commit Lauryn Johnson Lauryn Johnson 6'1" | OH West Salem | 2024 State OR and Chloe Leluge Chloe Leluge 6'3" | MB Bend | 2024 State #155 Nation OR , who has shown an insane amount of improvement over this season.
AMERICAN BID – OJVA 18-1 Gold
The OJVA 18-1 team had an impressive showing at the Bid tournament, sweeping the competition until falling to NPJ 18 Forefront in a close two-set championship match. With an incredibly talented batch of athletes on this team, they have proved competitive at both the regional and national levels. Mia Starr Mia Starr 5'10" | S Central Catholic | 2023 State #176 Nation OR , UC Davis commit, executed a 5-1 offense all day. On the outside primarily, Lauren Dreves Lauren Dreves 6'1" | OH Columbia River | 2024 State #46 Nation WA , Auburn commit, and Sophie Gregoire-Salagean Sophie Gregoire-Salagean 6'2" | OH Newberg | 2023 State #49 Nation OR , Oregon commit, were commanding, utilized in both the front and back row. Also in the rotation as pin hitters Kalista Lukovich Kalista Lukovich 6'0" | OH Nelson | 2023 State OR (Eastern Washington commit) and Isabel Patterson Isabel Patterson 5'10" | OH Jesuit | 2023 State #88 Nation OR (Oregon commit). Anchoring the teams back row as the libero, University of Pennsylvania commit, Elsa Mcdermott Elsa Mcdermott 5'7" | DS/L Catlin Gabel | 2023 State #180 Nation OR was steady and reliable. Utilized as a defensive specialist, Sidney Knowles Sidney Knowles 5'8" | DS/L Sherwood | 2023 State OR , an Eckerd College commit, played right back defense predominantly. In the middle, Notre Dame commit Olivia Maulding Olivia Maulding 6'2" | MB LaSalle Catholic | 2023 State #90 Nation OR proved a powerful force. Grace Wollmuth Grace Wollmuth 6'0" | MB Lake Oswego | 2023 State OR , setter turned middle, and Mia Fedota Mia Fedota 6'3" | MB St. Mary's Academy | 2023 State OR , University of Puget Sound commit, also saw time in the middle.
FREEDOM BID – Athena VB 18-1 Gold
After a tough loss against OJVA 18-1 to reach the finals, Athena 18-1 was able to bounce back and defeat Rise 18-1 to secure the Freedom bid. Makenna Wiepert Makenna Wiepert 5'11" | S Wilsonville | 2023 State OR (University of Texas, San Antonio commit) ran a 5-1 predominantly for the team. On the outside, Ceanna O’Loughlin Ceanna O’Loughlin 5'11" | RS Jesuit | 2023 State OR (Colorado State, Pueblo commit) and Natalie Andrew Natalie Andrew 5'11" | OH Ridgefield | 2023 State WA (US Naval Academy commit) shouldered an offensive load receiving a bulk of the sets. On the right side, a recent Georgia State commit, leftie Presley Nippert Presley Nippert 6'1" | RS Kelso | 2023 State WA . Lauren Patterson Lauren Patterson 5'5" | DS/L Sunset | 2023 State OR (Lloyal Marymount commit) led the teams back row as their libero. Zoë Szczesniak Zoë Szczesniak 5'8" | DS/L Nelson | 2023 State OR was utilized as a defensive specialist throughout the day. Bouncing back from an injury, Tatum Chase Tatum Chase 6'1" | MB Catlin Gabel | 2023 State OR (Seattle University commit) played in the middle. Also in the middle rotation, Morgan Olsen Morgan Olsen 5'11" | MB Jesuit | 2023 State OR .
