Setters hustle all over the court to get the second ball. They should be quick and communicative. All sets vary by height, speed, and placement. A great setter knows what their hitters like and will deliver practical sets. Meet eight setters from the 37th annual Las Vegas Classic. They are in order of their graduating year.
Danit Cohen Danit Cohen 5’8″ | S Chaminade Preparatory Highschool | 2023 State CA is a leader on the court and plays with great confidence. She is a fast-setter who can get to the ball from all areas of the court. Her quick touch makes ball delivery hittable to her pins. Cohen has no problem being aggressive and jousting her opponents at the net to ensure they don’t score. By her being able to “better the ball”, Cohen raises her team’s play. Coached by Mitch Kallick and Karl Rojo, Danit is a setter to watch.

Enaya Vaielua
Enaya Vaielua gets under a ball to create a good set and will chase down a stray pass. She’s focused and ready to receive the second touch. She communicates by yelling “help” if she’s unable to get there. Vaielua comes in to serve on a 6-2 rotation and when she’s back row she digs the attackers kill. Coached by Gus and Joshua Tuaniga, along with Katrina Tagaloasa, Enaya should be on the radar as a setter to watch.
Amelia Morales
Amelia Morales
Amelia Morales strategizes her team’s attack plays by calling the offense and using her sets. She can make quick decisions on the court about who to set and where to place it. Morales has good hands that set smoothly even when she’s facing a tough pass. Coached b Ray Banaag, Osvaldo Vogel, Eric Benitez and, Helen McMullin, Morales is a setter who should be under the radar.
Emma Fa’alogo
Emma Fa’alogo
Emma Fa’alogo places a perfect set with ease. Her hands are smooth and the different variations and locations of her sets make her unpredictable. She doesn’t hesitate to dive or dig for a ball. The way she shoots to outside, a quick to middle or backset to her opposite shows she’s a smart player on where to go with the ball. At 5’9, Fa’alogo can also block at the net. Coached by Gus and JoshuaTuaniga, along with Katrina Tagaloasa, Enaya Emma is a setter who can do it all on the court.
Maye Bejar-Gutierrez
Maye Bejar-Gutierrez
Maye Bejar-Gutierrez is an unselfish setter who spreads the ball around. She hustles on the court and will dive for a ball to keep it in play. Bejar-Gutierrez can get to off passes and still create hittable sets by adjusting her timing. She can also play defense by digging balls. Coached by Riley Kelly and Jordon Wilson, Maye is a hidden gem.

Kalia Teofilo Kalia Teofilo 5’9″ | S San Pedro | 2024 CA carries leadership and responsibility with her setter role. She communicates to her hitters what sets they are going to get. She is smart by being able to pick the best attacker to score. Teofilio Is quick to the ball and can adjust to bad passes by making them hittable. She has a nice jump set and soft touch that has very little to no rotation on the ball. She is a smart setter who knows how to capitalize on a setter’s dump. Coached by Alexandra Griffiths, Dana Kaleiohi, and Tauao Feomaia, Kalia is a hidden gem that should be on the radar for the class of 2024.
Lowyn Pereyda
Lowyn Pereyda
Lowyn Pereyda is a setter who also plays right side. Coached by Litara Keil and Joy Umeh, Lowyn makes plays in both positions. She know how to deliver to her hot hitters and establish the tempo on the court. She has good ball placement for her hitters to score. Pereyda stays ready and focused.
Olivia Smith
Olivia Smith
Olivia Smith is a setter who also plays right side. She can block at the net and reacts quickly to recover a block or tip. She hustles on the court and tries to get to every second ball. She uses her communication skills to direct her offense. Smith makes quick decisions on the court. Her serves can get opponents out of system. Coached by Litara Keil and Joy Umeh Olivia is a setter to keep an eye on.
A setter has so many responsibilities on the court. From running the offense to memorizing which way a hitter likes their set. They set, they block, they dig, they dive and they hustle all over the court. Setters have to be quick, agile and have great court awareness. A setters position can be mentally taxing and demanding. It takes a strong and smart player to command the duties of a setter. You just met eight from California, there are many more to share.
