Which Team Will Dominate At Durango Classic?

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Every September, Las Vegas stops being just a vacation destination and starts being the proving ground for the best high school volleyball programs in the country. The Durango Classic brings together a field that stretches from Hawaii to Kentucky, from South Dakota to Southern California, and the matchups that happen inside these gyms tend to shape the national conversation for months. I will be onsite to cover as many of these teams as possible. Here is an early look at some of the programs bringing the most compelling storylines into the tournament. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Sierra Canyon High School | Chatsworth, CA</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The preseason number one team in the country according to many national publications and the AVCA/USA Today poll arrives in Las Vegas with unfinished business and a roster that looks built to finish it. Sierra Canyon went 41-4 last season, won the CIF Southern Section Open Division title over Mater Dei and then watched the Monarchs turn around and beat them in the SoCal regional final on the way to the state championship. That loss has been sitting in the Trailblazers' collective memory all summer and it shows in how this program has approached the new season. The talent returning is extraordinary. Setter [player_tooltip player_id='338908' first='Lucky' last='Fasavalu'], committed to Missouri and a MaxPreps All-American, runs one of the fastest offensive systems in the country and was named to the All-Tournament team at the 2025 Durango Fall Classic. Outside hitters Eva Jeffries, committed to Tennessee, and [player_tooltip player_id='545313' first='Hanna' last='McGinest'], committed to Texas Tech, give the Trailblazers two elite left-side weapons who combined for hundreds of kills last season, while [player_tooltip player_id='475609' first='McKenna' last='McIntosh'], committed to USC, provides a third attacking option at the pin that most programs would build an entire offense around by itself. Anchoring the front row is middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='888357' first='Kendall' last='Omoruyi'], committed to Nebraska and ranked as the top player in the class of 2027 nationally, who brings a physical net presence and blocking efficiency that changes how opposing offenses have to operate. Libero [player_tooltip player_id='782106' first='Olive' last='Shum'] returns to organize a back row that held up against one of the most demanding schedules any program in the country faced last year. What the Durango Classic will reveal is whether the competitive edge that comes from falling short of a state title has sharpened this group into something truly special.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Mater Dei High School | Santa Ana, CA</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The reigning CIF State Open Division champions come to Las Vegas having already handled Redondo Union, Mira Costa, and Murrieta Valley in the early weeks of the new season, and the roster that takes the floor in Las Vegas is loaded with players who have already competed on stages that matter. [player_tooltip player_id='482047' first='Westley' last='Matavao'], the 6'0" outside hitter ranked 2nd overall in the state of California and nationally recognized among the top senior hitters in the country, brings the kind of athleticism and attacking range that changes how defenses have to plan at the pin. Setter [player_tooltip player_id='533581' first='Kalea' last='Lee'], ranked 19th nationally and standing 5'11", gives the Monarchs a distribution system that generates real deception and keeps the block guessing on every set. Middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='455792' first='Emma' last='Kingston'], at 6'4", is among the most physically imposing front row players in the country at the prep level, and her ability to both terminate rallies through the middle and alter the block for the rest of the offense is exactly the kind of asset that state championship rosters are built around. Right side [player_tooltip player_id='747547' first='Syriana' last='Messy'] provides a right-side option at 5'10" that keeps opposing defenses from loading entirely to the left side, and the back row depth from players like [player_tooltip player_id='747484' first='Malu' last='Rodrigues'] and [player_tooltip player_id='546559' first='Savanah' last='Capinpin'] gives head coach Dan O'Dell real flexibility in how he constructs his defensive system. The Durango Classic is a measuring stick for this program and Mater Dei has historically met that bar and then some.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Bishop Gorman High School | Las Vegas, NV</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Nobody in this building has more to prove on their home floor than Bishop Gorman and nobody in this tournament has a more decorated recent history to defend. The Gaels are four-time defending Nevada 5A state champions, having captured the title in 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026, and they enter the 2026-27 season at 11-0. The program graduated two players who rewrote the Nevada record books in outside hitter Ayanna Watson, the all-time kills leader, and setter Trinity Thompson, the all-time assists leader. What head coach Gregg Nunley has done throughout his tenure at Gorman is replace production without losing identity and the pieces he has available suggest that pattern will continue. Outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='528417' first='Aliana' last='Breitling'] returns to anchor the attacking side of the ball and has been a featured part of a program that has not lost a state championship match in four years. [player_tooltip player_id='774708' first='Sophie' last='Giacalone'] and [player_tooltip player_id='988005' first='Brixton' last='Loyd'] round out an attacking rotation that the coaching staff has specifically identified as ready for expanded roles, while [player_tooltip player_id='563109' first='Daylin' last='Fawson'] and [player_tooltip player_id='739478' first='Zarah' last='Ghadban'] provide additional front row depth that gives Gorman options when the system calls for adjustment.
