I spent a lot of time on the 17s courts this past weekend at MEQ. Some of these athletes have been committed since the summer of 2022 and others are still in their process to find their future home. I took a lot of player notes and here is a look into them. I didn't pay attention to if they were committed or not, I just was looking for new players who I thought made an impact for their team.

[player_tooltip player_id='169100' first='Emma' last='McCartney'] - AVC 17 Red

McCartney

Class of 2024 - Outside Hitter

A high flyer and extremely physical, McCartney is a big time point scorer for AVC 17 Red. She is a six rotation outside who can score points in bunches. I saw AVC 17 Red start their morning against Triangle in day two gold pools and it was a knockout fight. The margin of error with all of these top teams is incredibly small. McCartney is able to play high above the net and take what the defense gives her. She is also really dynamic in being able to pass to attack out of serve receive as well.

Avery Anders - AVC 17 Red

Class of 2024 - Libero

So impressive. I noticed Anders' intangibles where she is engaged, she talks, she is always involved with her teammates. Her ability speaks for itself where she can provide a consistent first content for her setters. She is more than the first contact as she is really strong with being able to pick up the tips, cover the block, and keep those scramble plays alive.

Paige Tode - Illini Elite 17 Cardinal

Class of 2025 Outside HItter

I did not realize when watching that Tode was an athlete playing up a class for Illini Elite 17 Cardinal. However with her size and physicality she is an impact player for this team out of Central Illinois. At 6'3, Tode has a high contact and hits with plenty of pop. She has a really high ceiling as well where she can score points at the 17 Open level and when she starts scoring points out of the backrow - watch out.

[player_tooltip player_id='180296' first='Madison' last='Bowser'] - Metro 17 Travel

Bowser

Class of 2024 - Middle Blocker

Bowser had some highlight worthy kills where she got her whole team hyped, thumping it on the ten foot line. At 6'2, Bowser has plenty of length and strength where causes a lot of havoc in the front line. She gets her shoulders above the net on her block and offensively she can hit with power as well as placement where she knows how to take it to the deep corners.

[player_tooltip player_id='110301' first='Hailey' last='Green'] - Michigan Elite 17 Mizuno

Class of 2024 - DS/L

I was impressed with the movement of Green as a libero. She has quick feet and can beat the ball to the spot where she can provide a clean first contact. Her anticipation for the next play demonstrates a high IQ. She also demonstrates consistency where she can handle a large volume of serve receive and being the go to in commanding the backrow.

[player_tooltip player_id='110298' first='Lea' last='Gage'] - L2 17-1

Class of 2024 - Setter

The first thing I noticed about Gage is how athletic she is. She has quick feet and is a great jumper - It also doesn't hurt that she is 5'11. These skills of athleticism and physicality make her someone that plenty of instate Michigan schools will have on their radar. I know a lot of schools would be very happy with a setter who can be physical in the front row, defend her position in the backrow, and up the game of everyone in the gym. Definitely a star next to her name as new players to watch for me.

[player_tooltip player_id='112087' first='Madison' last='Evett'] - Academy 17 Tsunami

Class of 2024 - Outside Hitter

I have watched this Academy team pretty closely since their 15s year and Evett is a new athlete on this team who can make a big impact. With Sophie Ledbetter moving to libero, this opened up a spot on the pin that Evett has filled in very well. The 6'2 outside has a big arm and a high contact point. She definitely puts some pace on the ball and can score points at the 17 Open level.

[player_tooltip player_id='110485' first='Brenna' last='Ginder'] - Team Pineapple 17 Black

Class of 2024 - Libero

COMMITTED to West Virginia on 3/20/2023

West Virginia must have been watching the same matches I was for Team Pineapple 17 Black. Ginder is the libero, the leader of the defense for this Pineapple squad where she makes so many touches look relatively easy and routine. Throughout the match, I kept thinking, “There she is again”. Ginder doesn't have wasted movement, she is incredibly efficient with her movement and quiet with her platform where she makes it easy for her setters to get in system.

Sarah Schnell - Miami Hype 17N Emilio

Schnell

Class of 2024 - Right Side

Schnell has to be on the radar of plenty of college coaches. At 6'3, she has a really high reach and is physically imposing in the front row. Oh, and she's left handed where she is a really tough matchup on the right side. She has a deceptively heavy ball that makes it for the other side to dig cleanly to stay in system. She is also going to be a lockdown blocker who can shut down an opposing outside hitter.

Pohaku 17-1

Watching Pohaku, I can't justify writing about one without writing about pretty much everyone on the team. [player_tooltip player_id='105631' first='Ava' last='Martin'] makes this team go as their setter where she does such a great job of putting her attackers in position to score. And Pohaku has plenty of attackers. Martin has the ability to hold the opposing middle where she has a lot of one on one matchups. Middle blocker Alexis Alexander is extremely physical, fast, and electric with the energy she brings to the court. She is a next level player. On the pin, [player_tooltip player_id='119733' first='Seenane' last='Brewer'] had a big weekend. She is a high flyer who can hit a variety of shots to score points. Nela Misipeka may be all of 5'8 or 5/9 is extremely fast to the ball with an explosive attack who was a major impact player. The defense duo of [player_tooltip player_id='150070' first='Claire' last='Jones'] and [player_tooltip player_id='152833' first='Riley' last='Ourth'] provided plenty of clean first contacts and found ways to score points from the service line as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='168169' first='Kate' last='Vondrak'] - NWI Iowa Premier Black

Class of 2024 - Outside Hitter

Don't sleep on those small town Iowa kids! Vondrak was a key player for NWI Premier consisting of a lot of small town multisport athletes who are getting great exposure competing at the likes of MEQ. Vondrak is a college prospect coaches can take note of with how she can play in six rotations and is a long athletic point scorer from the outside.

Alysia Perez - Iowa Rockets 17R

Class of 2024 - Setter

Perez is out of the Quad Cities area in Geneseo, IL who plays her club volleyball for Iowa Rockets out of the Iowa City area. The success to the game of Perez starts with her smooth footwork. She gets her feet to the ball and is able to use her hands instead of bump set to get her attackers involved. Melae Lacy had a nice match out of the middle where she showed a lot of explosiveness and Michalea Goad showed how dynamic she could be as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='139287' first='Taryn' last='DeWese'] - TVC 17 Back

Class of 2024 - Setter/Pin

Super smooth. I wasn't even on the TVC court when I saw Dewese set and make a play. She was on the court next to the one I was watching and her athleticism caught my eye. Dewese is able to remain neutral, jump setting whenever possible, and is able to get all of her hitters involved. She is also someone who can take it herself and be physical at the net where she can block and score points.
