The gigantic tournament had 19 different divisions and Prep Dig was in attendance for the Saturday AM wave, paying special attention to the teams from the Lone Star State that were in action in the 15 Open and 16 Open divisions.
Several players stood out with strong performances for their teams and we’re taking the week to recognize each of them. These middles were very solid with their play at the net and did a lot of work for their teams in the 15 Open Division:
Pyle continues to establish herself as one of the top middles in her age group in the Houston area. She played a big role in TAV Houston 15 Adidas’ triumph in the division, making a big impact on both sides of the ball at the net. Her long arms and quickness make of Pyle a very solid blocker, and that area of her game was in full display last weekend, but it’s her offense that’s making the most noise. She uses her length very well to overcome opposing blockers and can hit several different sets, which makes of her a very difficult player to defend against.
Highlights
Julia Whitfield
Julia Whitfield
Whitfield was one of the key players in the Louisiana’s WD Nation 15 Blue team that was only downed by TAV Houston 15 Adidas in the golden bracket final. She has a strong presence at the net and made a big impact with her blocking, using her long arms and good reading of the game to put opponents under pressure. Whitfield also displayed good efficiency on offense, siding out at a good rate.
Addison Parks
Addison Parks
Parks is listed at 5’9″ but looks a lot taller because of her long arms. Also capable of playing on the right, she was used in the middle with United VBA 15 Purple and had a big role in the team’s game. Parks reads the game well and moves quickly at the net, a combination that allowed her to put a lot of pressure on opposing hitters with her blocking. She also displayed very good offensive efficiency, making contact with the ball at a high point and hitting it hard. Serving is another of her skills as Parks had some good runs from the service line.
Other Positional Breakdowns:
* Setters * Outsides * Liberos * Right Sides
One of the top middle blockers in her age group in the state of Texas, Points played just like that with her Houston Stellar 15 Elite team. She was one of the top scoring options on the team, making a strong approach, hitting the ball hard and making very few errors on offense. Points plays with a lot of intensity and that adds some extra power to her game no matter what she’s doing. She also made a huge impact with her big blocking, moving around the net well and going up with excellent timing to stop opponents.
Lott’s game is still a work in progress in some aspects, but she had some good moments with her Katy United 15 Adidas team and indicated she could have a strong future. Her size is her main asset on the court and she’s still learning how to make the most of it, which leads her to still display some inconsistency. Lott makes contact with the ball at a very high point on offense and can be really difficult to stop when she gets into a rhythm. Her blocking is also coming together nicely as she’s getting better at reading the game and reacting to it.
