Texas will have a huge representation in Ohio, with as many as 44 teams entered to compete across six different divisions and many of them will be real contenders at the National Championship.
We’ve already posted our Texas Previews for each of the 18 American, 18 Freedom, 18 Liberty, 18 National and 18 USA divisions and now we’ll do things a little bit differently for the prestigious 18 Open division, presenting individual previews for the eight teams from the Lone Star State that will fight for the title in Columbus.
HJV 18 Elite – Houston Juniors (Houston)
Season Record (on AES): 39-13
Players to Watch:
A high-flying outside hitter, Tchouangwa is HJV 18 Elite’s main scoring option. Capable of scoring at a very high rate from either pin and the backcourt, she’s one of the most lethal hitters in the entire state, getting up really high at the net and unleashing tremendous power on her swings. Tchouangwa is very resourceful and consistent and thrives in big moments too. The pin hitter can also put up a big block at the net and makes a big impact on the backcourt with her passing and defense – although that area of her game is often overlooked because of her flashy offense.
Dewine’s consistent growth over the year has been really remarkable as she got to make progress in basically every area of her game. She’s an excellent ballhandler, who combines a great touch on the ball, calm behavior on the court and a very high volleyball IQ to run HJV 18 Elite’s offense in a very entertaining and efficient way. What makes of Dewine a standout setter, though, is her very complete game, which allows her to contribute in some areas most players in the position can’t. She’s a very good defender and arguably makes an even bigger impact at the net, blocking well and taking up hitting duties with the team.
Smith brings a lot of strength to HJV 18 Elite in the middle with her physical game. She’s one of the most effective blockers in the entire state, moving very well around the net and making big moves up at the net to shut down opposing hitters. One of the best things about Smith’s blocking is that she rarely leaves any gaps between her and the pin blocker, forcing the hitter to go around her block, often channeling them right into defense. The middle is a very prolific offensive player too, hitting all sorts of different sets with tremendous power and efficiency.
Kennedy Gustafson

HJV 18 Elite has a lot of defensive talent in their squad, but Gustafson beat the strong competition to emerge as the team’s starting libero this season. She’s one of those defenders who impress without making flashy plays just because the essence of her game is doing whatever is needed to keep things simple. A Louisiana commit, Gustafson is a player that quietly puts on excellent performances every and that her teammates know they can trust. She’s an outstanding passer and a solid defender too.
A new addition to HJV 18 Elite this season, Farooq embraced the challenge of switching positions in her last year of club volleyball and has been playing outside hitter for the team. Her impressive athleticism continues to be a big asset for her, who displayed great improvement in the new role throughout the season, finding her offensive rhythm at the pin and developing a fairly complete arsenal out there. Farooq is also an excellent blocker and has been able to make an impact with that too. Her passing is still a work in progress but that wasn’t really a problem during the season given HJV’s fantastic depth at defensive specialist.
