Continue ReadingSouthern California and Northern California are two out of forty USA Volleyball regions. There are over 5000 clubs nationwide. Thousands of clubs equal thousands of players which allows for a huge selection of talented and skilled athletes. At tournaments and qualifiers, I try and balance my views of both areas of California. Below meet eight players, four from Southern California and four from Northern California. No matter which area of the state they are from, they are part of this volleyball subculture which is one big family.
Dana Healy
Dana Healy
Dana Healy plays for Laguna Beach volleyball club out of Santa Margarita in Southern California. She is listed as a libero on the LBVBC 16 Brian roster but the day I watched her play she was an outside hitter and her defensive skills as a libero complimented her gameplay. Healy was so fun to watch with her powerful left-handed swing that would find the ball going cross-court through the block. Her defense in back row also was a highlight as she didn’t spare any time getting on the floor to save or dig a ball. She is quick on her feet and her lateral movement gets her in position quickly, ready to save or attack. Shining the spotlight on Dana Healy for being a good offense and defensive player.
Kayla Spencer
Kayla Spencer
Kayla Spencer plays for ACT volleyball club out of Yorba Linda in Southern California. She is a setter who caught my eye with her stand-out baby blue shoes and smooth hands. She worked hard on the court getting to passes and able to push the ball on target for her pins to capitalize. She is smart and quick, being able to read the court for dumps in open areas. Spencer has a nice set with low to no ball spin for her hitters and a quick set to the middle. She moves all over the court and is not afraid to get on the floor to dig a ball. The spotlight shines on Kayla Spencer for her good hands, communication skills, and leadership on the court.
Annasophia Vranjes
Annasophia Vranjes
Annasophia Vranjes plays for NorCal volleyball club out of Livermore in Northern California. She is a player who can dig, block at the net and kill the ball. She has a quick reaction to overpasses and bangs them right back down. Vranjes has a serve that accumulates aces by getting her opponents out of system. She is an all-around six-rotation player and if needing to score, she is one of the go-to hitters. She has three more years of high school and club growth which will only elevate her volleyball IQ and gameplay. Shining the spotlight on Annasophia for the way she is ready, reacts, and plays the game.
Samantha “Sammie” Rogness
Samantha “Sammie” Rogness
Samantha “Sammie” Rogness is a left-handed right-side hitter who plays for NorCal volleyball club out of Livermore in Northern California. She follows the ball and gets into position to block at the net. She can hit through the block and between the seam. Rogness reacts by diving on the floor to save balls that get pushed over the net and keeps them in play. Shining the spotlight on Sammie Rogness for being a team player on the court.
Elise Lau
Elise Lau
Elise Lau plays for San Francisco Elite volleyball club out of South San Francisco in Northern California. She plays all around which includes defense in back row and serving. She has a nice cross-court hit at the ten-foot line that is fire. She is a powerful hitter on the outside and middle-back. She gets in the air hitting pipe and her high arm swing can make a perfect connection. Lau is a leader on the court by the way she communicates. Her defense makes her capable of popping up a hard attack and passing it on target. Shining the spotlight on Lau for having a high volleyball IQ and being a great all-around player.
Meghan Kagehiro
Meghan Kagehiro
Meghan Kagehiro plays for Rage volleyball club out of Ripon in Northern California. Liberos tend to be fierce, and Kagehiro falls into that description. She is ready to dive and dig for a ball to keep it in play. She has a back set and bump set that finds its location. She gets low and ready for attacks and passes the ball with ease. She covers the tips and blocks keeping the offense going. Kagehiro has one more year of volleyball and would be an asset to any program seeking a defensive player who knows how to do the job. Shining the spotlight on Meghan for how she covers the court, her hitters and she’s not afraid to sacrifice her body to make a save.
Sofia Indelicato
Sofia Indelicato
Sofia Indelicato plays for San Gabriel Elite volleyball club out of Los Angeles in Southern California. I associate the saying “smooth like butter” with the sets that Indelicato delivers. She has soft hands that create hittable sets. She gets her fingertips right under the ball and has a delicate release. She has the speed to get to the ball wherever it is on the court. Indelicato has a quick reaction time that makes her capable of digging fast attacks that come her way. The spotlight shines on Sofia for her great hands and court awareness that helps with being a great offensive leader.
Chloe Keirn
Chloe Keirn
Chloe Keirn plays for San Diego volleyball club out of San Diego in Southern California. She is the first line of defense, ready at the net to stop a ball. She shifts side to side to help the pins block. She has a fast reaction to the overpasses by hitting the ball back down before the opponent can get into position. Keirn scores on the short fast sets with her strong swing. She serves and plays back row before rotating out with the libero. Shinning the spotlight on Keirn for the way she penetrates the net and scores on offense.
