Each position has its specific role and duties that make the game run smoothly and contributes to the team’s success. Teams have to depend on each position and each player to do their part and compete on the court. Meet six players below who play one of the above-mentioned positions. They play their part to help win games and achieve success at tournaments and qualifiers.
Maya Banks Maya Banks 6’1″ | RS Chino Hills | 2025 State CA plays a huge role in blocking as she is matched up against the outside hitter from the opposing team. Being tall and able to jump helps her shut down the outside hitter from the other side. She is an offensive threat by attacking a ball around the block and finding an open area on the court. Maya is tall, athletic, and powerful at the net. She can tool the block and uses different attacks to score; a full-on swing to kill the ball, cross-court, or downline.

Kai Nakijama
Kai Nakajima performs well under pressure. She can make accurate passes that help her team sideout. She makes great defensive plays and with her speed, she efficiently covers the court. Her defensive skills help when going against a strong server or going after attacks and tips. Kai is quick to react and fast on her feet, being able to get into position and cover her pins.
Olivia Ip Olivia Ip 6’0″ | OH Polytechinic | 2025 State CA can jump high and hit the ball hard. She accomplishes getting the ball over the net by attacks or placing tips in open areas. Being a big part of serve receive, Olivia is also a good passer. She is an all-around great player that can score on offense and get blocks on defense. She is smart offensively by knowing when to roll the ball or tip around the block. Olivia is agile and coordinated to quickly transition from defense to offense and adjust to hit the ball from different positions.
Olivia Foye Olivia Foye 5’8″ | DS/L Huntington Beach | 2025 State #24 Nation CA is a specialist with serve receive, dig the ball, and is involved with all kinds of defensive plays. She takes control of back row by diving, digging, and making defensive saves from offensive attacks. She gets the balls that go through the seam and can pass with accuracy. Olivia can get to the second ball and bump set with precision so her pins can still get a kill. Her reaction time and fast feet make it easy to cover a lot of areas on the court.
Kayla Jung
Kayla Jung
Kayla Jung runs the offense by delivering from passers to her hitters at the net. She can accurately set the second touch to the hitting location for her outside, middle, or opposite to attack. She has a huge responsibility by holding together the offense and defense. She is accurate and consistent with smooth hands and smooth sets. Kayla is quick and agile, being able to chase down passes and get underneath the ball for a strong set.
Soliel Sands
Soliel Sands
Soleil Sands runs quick attacks at middle and blocks at the net. She has strong footwork and a quick reaction time with the ability to transition from defense to a fast-paced offense. Her timing is precise in order to make contact with a quick set by the setter. Soleil has a strong blocking presence by transitioning to either pin and penetrating the net.
Each position contributes to how the game of volleyball goes, so each player’s role is important. Their role no matter how big or small is another piece of the game that has to fit perfectly in order to score points. As club season is slowly coming to an end good luck to all the California teams and players. Keep being leaders on and off the court.
