Teams from Texas are all ramping up in order to bring their best game in the most important moment of the season and even those that won’t make the trip to Chicago are also in their best form after months of practice and competing together.
This past weekend, we followed one of the tournaments that were going on in the Houston area, the Skyline Classic #10, held at the popular Houston Skyline Volleyball Club. We were following the 17 Girls Division, which had nine teams from the region in action, and are bringing our positional reports and All-Tournament team selection during the week.
In today’s article, we’ll take a look at some outside hitters who had great performances with their teams:
Briana Betancourth
Briana Betancourth
Betancourth played a big role for her Xcel VB 171 Adidas team, providing them with quality and good production on both sides of the ball. The pin hitter displayed a solid game on the backcourt, contributing with her consistent passing and getting several digs, and also held her own at the net despite her size limitation. Betancourth made very good calls when up at the net, often looking for empty spots on the court. She made great contact with the ball in her swings, wrapping it with her hand and getting great precision in her placements.
McKee was playing one age group up with W Revolution 17 Premier, but that didn’t stop her from shining among older players. Very long and athletic, she was her team’s main point-scorer and carried their offense on certain occasions. McKee is very explosive with her approach and has all sorts of shots as part of her game, being very difficult to stop. She was very consistent at the net during the day, hitting different sets in every play, and also had great success with her big, technical block.
Highlights
Haley Precella
Haley Precella
The main offensive player in her Houston Stellar 17 Select team, Precella responded well to the challenge and displayed a strong game on Saturday. A pin hitter with good length and a big vertical, she showcased a very interesting offense. Precella had excellent reach, power in her swings and also a great vision to find difficult angles. She consistently scored from the left, the right and even the middle back position. The pin hitter also had some good serving runs during the day, getting opponents out of system.
A very physical player, Arrington used her athleticism to score at a tight rate with her H Skyline 17 White team. Because of her impressive vertical and body control, every set she got during the day, even the ones off the net, were scoring opportunities and she had good efficiency putting them down. When in system, Arrington is very difficult to stop because besides making contact with the ball a very right point, she also has a very quick arm. The pin hitter also displayed good reading of the game and reflexes when playing defense.
Abigail Edmonson
Abigail Edmonson
A defensive specialist with her high school team College Park, Edmonson took up hitting duties with W Revolution 17 Adidas and did a very good job. She was extremely solid on the backcourt, as expected, often covering half of the court in serve-receive, but also stood out at the net. Edmonson displayed some interesting power to swing and score when in system, but was also smart to turn to tips and tooling the block when she was hitting against a established defensive system.
