Each of the athletes mentioned in this report finished their junior seasons with 50 total blocks or more for their respective Class 5A programs.
The shortest player on this list is five-foot-eight, but each one could be considered “Kansas Tall Timbers” and a couple of them were recently featured for their game on the basketball court as well.
Tatum Grimes Tatum Grimes 6'2" | MB St. Thomas Aquinas | 2024 State #184 Nation KS , 6’2”, MH, St. Thomas Aquinas
Grimes finished her junior season with 105 total blocks to unofficially lead the class of 2024 blockers in class 5A. Grimes plays club ball with MAVS KC and is the No. 9 ranked player in Kansas in the Class of 2024. Grimes has recently committed to continue her volleyball career at Army West Point.
Carly Dameron, 6’2”, MB, Eisenhower (Goddard)
Dameron finished the 2022 season with 78 total blocks. Dameron is also an accomplished basketball player and was recently featured on Prep Girls Hoops as a top rebounder in Class 5A. She is an imposing threat under the glass in basketball and at the net in volleyball.
Mersadie Spray, 5’8”, S/RS, Great Bend
It was a surprise to find Spray’s name so high on the blocking stat sheet. She plays setter and right side primarily but finished her junior season with 65 blocks. Spray was featured in a report on the top setters in Class 5A and her she is again in a report about blocking. The key issue for college coaches to focus on with Spray is that she can play six rotations and can do it all on the court. Spay is also an accomplished basketball player and is ranked No. 38 among her peers in the Prep Girls Hoops class of 2024 rankings.
Lizzie Romer Lizzie Romer 5'10" | MB Kapaun Mt. Carmel | 2024 State KS , 5’10”, MH, Kapaun Mt. Carmel
Romer finished her junior season at Kapaun Mt. Carmel with 64 total blocks. She also accumulated 213 kills during the 2022 season. Romer hits the ball hard and has a nice tip game as well.
Julia Headley Julia Headley 6'2" | MB St. James | 2024 State #103 Nation KS , 6’2”, MH, St. James Academy
Headley finished the 2022 season with 62 total blocks. The impressive hitter also finished with 257 kills. Headley plays club ball with KC Power and has committed to playing volleyball at Colgate University. She is ranked No. 11 in Prep Dig’s rankings for the class of 2024.
Ashlynn Jaccard Ashlynn Jaccard 5'11" | MB Lansing | 2024 State KS , 5’10”, MH, Lansing
Jaccard finished her junior season with 62 total blocks. Jaccard ranked No. 77 in the Prep Dig rankings for the class of 2024. She plays club ball for KC Power and is uncommitted. Jaccard will be coming off a solid club season headed into her senior campaign at Lansing. She was an Honorable Mention member of the All-Deck 17-Club Team featured on Prep Dig.
Carly Koster Carly Koster 6'2" | MB Maize South | 2024 State KS , 6’2” MH, Maize South
Koster racked up 61 blocks on her stat sheet in 2022. She also has 85 kills during her junior season with Maize South. Koster has big reach and can jump tall buildings. She plays club ball with Kansas Networks and will be leaned on heavily during her senior season at Maize South.
Virginia Van Der Werff, 5’10”, S, Lansing
Van Der Werff is the second setter to make this list. She finished her junior season with 55 total blocks. The Lansing setter is ranked No. 95 among her class of 2024 peers and is uncommitted. Van Der Werff is another six-rotation player in the making that could really lead a college program to the top of the standings.
Chloe Linville Chloe Linville 6'0" | MB Maize | 2024 State KS , 6’1”, MH, Maize
Linville finished her junior season with 52 total blocks. She also had 146 kills. Linville is firm at the net and has solid blocking skills. She can really hammer the ball as a hitter and has a bright future ahead of her. Linville is currently ranked No. 66 in the class of 2024 rankings. She plays club ball with Alpha Academy.
Rachel Tomac, 6’1”, MH/RS, Hutchinson
Tomac finished her junior season with the Salthawks with 50 total blocks. She also finished with 163 kills. Tomac can hit the ball from the middle or the right side. Her hitting from the right side down the line is impressive to watch. She plays her club ball with Shockwave.
