There were around 60 prospects on the court during the event held at the Texas Tornados club, coming not only from H-Town, but also from several other cities in the Lone Star State, such as Austin, San Antonio, McAllen and Corpus Christi, and it was a highly competitive, yet very fun atmosphere.
Fellow Prep Dig scout Mallori Howington, myself and the court coaches were paying attention to everything and were pleased to see many prospects standing out with their strong play. We’ll spend the next few days highlighting them and here are some more names we’d like to give a shoutout:
White did a very good job on Saturday, standing out in a very talented group of outside hitters. What caught my attention in her game as that it had a little bit of everything, which makes of her a player with high potential, capable of delivering what her team needs. She’s physical and smart enough to hold her own offensively, skilled enough to play good defense and pass at a consistent level and has a strong determination to work hard on both sides of the ball. White’s grit on the court didn’t go unnoticed as she was one of the players who gave everything in every play.

I first saw Carr about eight months ago, in another of our showcases, and can probably say she’s one of the players in the Houston area who improved the most in the period. Her physical tools continue to be a big part of her game (and they will always be), but it’s easy to notice how she improved mentally, both in terms of understanding the game better and just becoming stronger. Carr’s offense is also much more effective, combining reach, power and good variation, and her blocking is developing into a scary weapon.

I had watched a bit of Hargy during the last club season, but was able to pay more attention on Saturday and really liked what I saw. Very strong from a technical standpoint, she’s also very focused and determined on the court and is always willing to make an extra effort to make the correct technical movement when she gets on the ball. Hargy is also very calm when working on the backcourt and that also contributes to her great efficiency rate with passing and defense.

A new face to me, Smith emerged as a solid setter during Saturday’s showcase. She has some really good hands and was always very accurate with her sets. Smith was particularly good at keeping her team in system even when the passing wasn’t very good and much of it was due to how quick she was to move to the ball. Because of that, she also recovered several shanked passes that went backward. Smith also showed some very interesting quality playing defense.

Johnson was very good offensively during the event. She’s not very tall, but gets off the floor extremely well and has a whip of an arm. She’s a powerful hitter, but also has excellent technical resources and great vision, always finding ways to hit around the block and put the ball down. She plays with great intensity and is very efficient at hitting on the left or the right. Johnson is also a solid blocker as she times her jumps well and has an impressive hangtime.
