The Houston Open 2023 will reunite 23 of the best programs in the area for two days of competition at the Houston Skyline club, on Friday and Saturday.
Prep Dig will be on-site following the first day of the event and will bring detailed reports and the best photos, but before the tournament starts, let’s get to know some of the most exciting talent that will be in action. Keep an eye out for these outside hitters:
A sophomore, Rio is expected to play a big role for St. John’s this season, using her well-rounded game to contribute to the team on both sides of the ball. She’s a very technical player and that reflects in the efficiency she displays on the backcourt, be it passing or playing defense. Although not the tallest player, Rio also does well at the net, being a viable scoring option for the Mavericks. She gets off the floor well, has a very quick right arm and is extremely intelligent with her shot selection.

Chloe DeMoss
Chloe DeMoss
DeMoss’ performace will probably have a big weight on FBCHA’s success in the tournament as she’s the team’s top offensive player. Versatile at the net, she can play on the left or the rigth and is very productive, even when working with out-of-system sets. DeMoss has a high contact point and a lot of power in her rigth arm, but is also great at finding effective angles to go around the block. She has improved her backcourt skills over the years and is now also capable of contributing on the backcourt playing defense and passing.
A pin hitter with the defensive strenght of a libero and offensive skills that allow her to carry any team’s offense, Bulow is arguably one of the most complete and talented players in the entire tournament. There’s really nothing she can’t do at a high level and her game heavily impacts the teams she plays for. Defensively, Bulow is very technical and long, a combination that allows her to get to balls not many others would and ao actually dig them. Offensively, she’s extremely explosive, gets off the floor well and does an excellent job of hitting around opposing blockers.

Kaleigh Frazier
Kaleigh Frazier
Don’t be fooled by Frazier’s small frame as she’s probably among the most powerfful and explosive offensive players in the tournament. A very successful track and field student-athlete, she’s incredibly athletics and can go up insanely high when she’s set at the net. Besides jumping to the roof, Frazier is also amazingly quick, which allows her to adjust to imperfect sets and hit some very quick ones at the pin. She pairs her unmatched athleticism with very solid technical skills and is very strong on the backcourt as well.
Love was among the most exciting offensive players to emerge on last year’s freshman class. Very long and athletic, she’s a handful to opposing blockers with her ability to get off the floor and make contact with the ball at a very high point. Her offense is pretty versatile too as she can can swing with power and precision from the left and the right and has been consistently expanding her offensive arsenal. Love is also very calm on the court and that helps her make good decisions in moments of pressure.
