Prep Dig was in attendance on Friday and we got to see some really exciting prospects on the court during the day. We’re taking the next few days to recognize the players who had great performances and these outside hitters played big for their teams:
Warner Stahlbaum
Warner Stahlbaum
Originally a middle, Stahlbaum played at the pin this weekend and was one of the reasons why St. John’s advanced all the way to the final of the golden bracket. She used her physical tools extremely well on offense, getting off the floor well and making contact with the ball at a very high point. Stahlbaum seemed to have immediately adjusted to hitting higher sets at the pin and made very good decisions offensively to put the ball down. Her blocking skills also gave the Mavericks a much stronger presence on that side of the game as she got several stops during the weekend.
Madison Hobbs
Madison Hobbs
A very talented beach volleyball player, Hoss brought a lot to Second Baptist with her very complete game. A very technical player, she was huge on the backcourt, passing exremely well and contributing on defense with important plays. Although not very tall, she also did an excellent job at the net, scoring even in difficult situations. Hoss got off the floor well, fully stretched her left arm to make contact with the ball at the highest possible point and took full advantage of the angles generated for a lefty at the pin.
Emma Samuelson
Emma Samuelson
Another player with beach background, Samuelson will play on the sand at the collegiate level after having committed to Eckerd College. She joined Houston Christian this year coming from Stratford and immediately upgraded the team at the outside hitter position. A player with good technical skills and great mobility on the court, she’s solid on defense and even better at the net, where she combines explosiveness and impressive technical resources. Samuelson is typically powerful enough to put the ball down with heavy swings, but she sees the other side of the court very well and scores off of tips as well.
Abby Willingham
Abby Willingham
Willingham was the heart and soul of a talented FBCHA team that finished third in the golden bracket alongside twin sister Emma. A very complete and energetic player, she’s heavily involved with everything the team does on the court, contributing on both sides of the game. Although not very tall, Willingham is extremely explosive and can go up against the tallest and most difficult blockers. Her technical skills are excellent and she makes very few mistakes in every area of the game, giving the team a lot of rhytm and consistency.
Playing as a pin hitter, Berry was the main offensive player in her St. Andrew’s team. Very explosive and making contact with the ball at a very high point, she was really difficult to stop. Berry displayed great resources on the left, hitting line and angle with great efficiency, and also had great production when set at the middle back position. Her blocking was also very strong as she combined great reach and excellent reading of the game when making plays at the net. Berry also did fine with her passing when targeted by opponents
