The Harvest Festival Invitational in Gothenburg is a must-visit venue showcasing the state’s best small-town teams and athletes. That’s why I made it part of my volleyball travels last weekend, and we naturally have some takeaways from such a high-profile event.
So, let’s start with some of the star attackers from the 2023 Harvest Festival Invite.
Mandernach has long been a dominant force in the Kearney Catholic lineup, and she’s really finding her stride as a senior. The versatile attacker has expanded her role and is now a true six-rotation threat. We saw that range materialize in Gothenburg as Mandernach got her share of swings on the pipe and played stout defense. Those contributions will be key as the Stars look to claim their perennial spot in the state tournament.
Let’s keep running through those veteran outside hitters. Gothenburg has leaned on Evert’s attacking production throughout the school’s multi-year status as a championship frontrunner. Evert has changed the trajectory of the Gothenburg program and shows no signs of slowing down. Her reliable swings on the left pin should lift Gothenburg to another Lincoln trip this November.
Makenna Starkey
Makenna Starkey
Starkey’s emergence in the middle has made Minden’s balance better than ever. She gets off the floor quickly and works hard to make herself available in transition. Minden will take full advantage of Starkey’s strong arm whenever passing allows it, making the Whippets infinitely more difficult to defend.

Here’s a player who ought to be on our 2026 watch list before long. Caskey’s physicality and scoring prowess made her the ideal M1 for Ogallala last weekend. Not only was Caskey formidable in the middle, but she also took some first-ball swings on the pin to give the Indians a few much-needed sideouts. This high-impact middle blocker is just getting started in her rapid ascent with Ogallala.
Kehlanee Bengston
Kehlanee Bengston
It was a joy to watch Bengston perform in clutch situations for Aurora last weekend. This fearless mentality was especially apparent during Aurora’s three-set battle with St. Paul, as Bengston was called upon to take some critical swings in deuce situations. The senior delivered, helping the Huskies play some of their best volleyball of the 2023 season.
Ferguson churns out big numbers like it’s just another day in the office. The senior is spearheading the Chadron offense with nearly four kills per set and an impressive 0.250 efficiency. Not many teams were able to fully contain Ferguson when she was in a rhythm, producing several floor-denting kills from the all-state performer.
Katie Oakley
Katie Oakley
Yes, we have a lot more sophomores to add to our radar. Oakley is one of those. This quick, high-flying pin attacker was St. Paul’s out-of-system outlet in just about all Wildcat matches in Gothenburg. You can’t lose track of Oakley in the back row, either, as she will readily take an assertive swing on the pipe. If we’re looking to identify athletes who surprised us last weekend, Oakley is high on that list.
Cynley Wilkinson
Cynley Wilkinson
Wilkinson keeps rising up at these big events. She’s the York attacker that opposing teams have to plan for regardless of rotation. The junior showed a wicked right arm on both pins and was also effective at generating positive block touches. The Dukes have a clear identity at this point in the season with Wilkinson leading the charge.
