This series of articles will showcase those freshman volleyball players who are shouting “We Got Next!”. Let’s meet a few of the players who are showing that they are ready for the big stage.
Delaney Wright Delaney Wright 5'10" | OH Montgomery | 2027 State TX [2027] 5-10 Outside (HS: Montgomery/Club: TAV Houston /Verbal: Uncommitted)
Delaney is currently an unranked prospect in the 2027 class according to our Prep Dig Texas State Rankings, but that is only because we have not released her grad class yet. She should have no problem making the list once I update it in a few weeks. Miss Wright plays for Montgomery High School and also for the Texas Advantage Volleyball Houston club program. This season she has been special for Delaney as she has been asked to be the offensive leader for an entire team. I love how she has stepped up to the plate and hit a home run for her varsity squad. Not only is she leading her team in kills, but she also has the second most kills in the entire state of Texas amongst all freshmen on varsity. Equipped with a very live right arm that acts like a hard driven whip, she slices through defense like butter. The one aspect that stands out to me the most is how she is able to kill the ball from multiple spots on the court. Montgomery brings her around to the middle for second tempo shots and she murders the ball to the corners well. She will be at the top of the kills lists for the foreseeable future due to her ability to move the ball around to different spots with ease.
Corina Barrera [2027] 5-9 Outside (HS: Sotomayor/Club: South Texas Volleyball Academy/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Corina is currently an unranked prospect in the 2027 Class according to our Prep Dig Texas State Rankings, but that is only because I have not released them for her grad class yet. She plays volleyball at Sotomayor High School and also plays club for South Texas Volleyball Academy. Miss Barrera is a spark plug full of energy on the court. I love how she has total body control throughout each skill she performs. On the left side as an attacker, she has the amazing ability to turn on the ball at the last second in mid-air to fool the blockers into thinking she is going to swing angle and score down the line. Not all younger players have that ability right now and she does it so effortlessly. I also love how in serve receive she gets really deep to her touch point in order to create tons of momentum for her approach. This helps her get as high as she can with her attack. This season she has amassed 418 kills which is fifth most amongst all freshmen on varsity. Her ceiling to improve is very high and we think everyone will be seeing a lot from her in the club season also.
Ava Martinez [2027] 5-5 Setter (HS: Goose Creek Memorial/Club: Absolute Volleyball Academy/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Ava is currently an unranked prospect in the 2027 class according to our Prep Dig Texas State Rankings, but that is only because we have not released her grad class yet. Miss Martinez dishes the rock for Goose Creek Memorial High School and also plays club at Absolute Volleyball Academy of Texas. Armed with a super aggressive float serve, Miss Martinez is a beast from the service line. She is also a very accomplished setter who is leading the charge for the Goose Creek Memorial Patriots as a freshman. She has tallied 75 aces, 324 digs, added 29 kills and handed out an astonishing 905 assists on the year. That is good enough for second most amongst all freshmen in the entire state of Texas at the varsity level. I love how in the right back zone, she can dig like a libero. She also is able to use those gifted hands to dig attacks also, which means that she is a true defender. We are excited about what we see and think everyone should take notice of the stats she is putting up this year.
