Class 2A featured a collection of really good teams in 2023. Then, there was the one that ranked among the greatest of all time.

Dike-New Hartford swept through the state tournament, winning all nine sets. The Wolverines won their third championship in the last four seasons. They were runner-up in '22.

DNH put together a historically spectacular campaign. It finished with a 50-0 record while taking on the best teams in all classes. The Wolverines lost one set all-season, which came against Dowling Catholic, the 5A runner-up.

As one would expect, DNH is well represented on our 2A all-state teams. Other really strong players join them with some excellent performers just missing the cut:

FIRST-TEAM

[player_tooltip player_id='168149' first='Payton' last='Petersen'], '24, OH, Dike-New Hartford

Petersen has a strong case for being the best player in the state this season, regardless of class. She can do it all on this level, and usually does so. Her 616 kills this fall ranked second in 2A. She was second on the Wolverines in digs (328) and 36.0 blocks. She's off to Louisville next year.

[player_tooltip player_id='389079' first='Bailey' last='Boeve'], '26, OH, Hinton

Boeve followed up a fabulous freshman season with a super sophomore campaign. Like Peterson, she stands out through six rotations with the swing being her biggest thing. Her 204.0 blocks were 79 more than second best in 2A. She also paced her squad with 391 kills and chipped in with 150 digs.

[player_tooltip player_id='168150' first='Jadyn' last='Petersen'], '24, OH, Dike-New Hartford

The sister and teammate of [player_tooltip player_id='168149' first='Payton' last='Petersen'], [player_tooltip player_id='168150' first='Jadyn' last='Petersen'] stands out as a special player in her own right. She owned the team lead with 332 digs and ranked second to Payton with 419 kills and second to [player_tooltip player_id='251662' first='Maryn' last='Bixby'] with 38.0 blocks. She'll be a welcome addition for Northern Iowa, where her mother, Bobbi Petersen, is the head coach.

[player_tooltip player_id='251662' first='Maryn' last='Bixby'], '24, MH, Dike-New Hartford

Bixby complemented the Petersens very well. She improved throughout her prep career and put together her best campaign as a senior. She provided a defensive presence in the middle of the net as evidence by her team-best 88.0 blocks. She also produced 357 kills (.436), generating power with her long right arm often hitting down thanks to leaping ability and agility.

[player_tooltip player_id='261094' first='Reese' last='Naeve'], '26, OH, Regina

Naeve is one of the better kept standouts in the state, partially a product of the Regals falling a win short of the state tournament in each of her two varsity seasons. If she gets to Coralville in '24, she'll raise her stock. She'll help herself in club as well. As a sophomore, she ranked third in 2A with 600 kills and led Regina with 409 digs. Naeve also recorded 29.0 blocks.

[player_tooltip player_id='168172' first='Isabelle' last='Elliott'], '24, OH, Sumner-Fredericksburg

Another Northern Iowa signee, Elliott led Sumner-Fredericksburg to the state tournament for the second year in a row. Her 530 kills were the fifth most among 2A performers. She also posted 240 digs and 28.0 blocks. She played club ball with the Petersens and Bixby.

SECOND-TEAM

[player_tooltip player_id='215426' first='Molly' last='Shafer'], '25, OH, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont returned to the state tournament for a second year in a row led by the Shafer sisters. Molly ranked sixth in 2A with 476 kills (.394). She paced the Rockets with 210 digs and also contributed 28.0 blocks.

[player_tooltip player_id='216055' first='Kate' last='Shafer'],, '25, S/OH, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont

[player_tooltip player_id='216055' first='Kate' last='Shafer'] runs the show for Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, leading the squad with 495 assists. She swung her way to 192 kills, ranked second on her team with 48.0 blocks and contributed 187 digs.

[player_tooltip player_id='168170' first='Carlie' last='Willis'], '24, OH, Grundy Center

Willis led 2A with 661 kills in '23, hitting an efficient .383. Her 292 digs were the second most among the Spartans. The St. Cloud State signee also chipped in with 49.0 blocks.

[player_tooltip player_id='389012' first='Channing' last='Johnson'], '26, S, Denver

The sophomore setter handed out 973 assists, the fifth most in the class. In addition, Johnson ranked second on a state semifinalist in both digs (248) and blocks (48.0).

[player_tooltip player_id='168175' first='Kinsey' last='Mohwinkle'], '24, MH, Aplington-Parkersburg

Another St. Cloud State signee, Mohwinkle helped the Falcons reach the state tournament for the first time since '08. She led them with 360 kills. She also contributed 187 digs and 35.0 blocks.

[player_tooltip player_id='206559' first='Ava' last='Czarnecki'], '24, OH, Lisbon

Czarnecki packs a lot of power despite being shorter than most outside hitters. She does so with solid technique and explosive athleticism. She cranked out 540 kills (.463) this fall. She also registered 194 digs and 22.0 blocks.
