Four teams in each division will be on the court at the Curtis Culwell Center over the next few days and each of the 24 programs competing for the honor of ruling Texas features several players with extraordinary potential.
As we warm up for the State Tournament, let’s go over the top players in each division, starting with 1A, which has Blum, Bronte, Harold and Neches as the title contenders.
Players to Watch
Emily Jackson
Emily Jackson
Jackson had had a prominent role with the Lady Longhorns since her sophomore season and that beacame even more true this season, when, as a senior, she not only got to lead her team with her play, but also in a leadership role. A technical outside hitter, she typically carries the team’s offense and will certainly be the one Bronte turns to in big moments at the State Championship. Also a basketball student-athlete, Jackson also does great work at the net with her blocking.
Floraya Richardson
Floraya Richardson
Richardson plays a hybrid role with Harrold, splitting time between the middle blocker and outside hitter positions. She had good size and is very physical, often being the Hornets’ main offensive option. Besides getting off the floor very well, she also makes contact with the ball at a very high point. Richardson has a quick right arm and her excellent footwork allows her to at times get down from a block in the middle and swinng in transition from the pin. She’s also a good server.
Rumohr has been in the last three State Tournament finals with Blum and will try to help the team defend the title they won last year in her senior season. She offers a lot to the Bobcats, ranging from accurate and smart setting and point-scoring to invaluable leadership. Rumohr is a hard-worker on the court and has a central role in everything the team does on the court. She’s also been very productive for Blum, having tallied 1,081 assists, 106 kills, 343 digs, 25 blocks and 49 aces this season alone.
Kacie Trimble
Kacie Trimble
Trimble has been a stud for Neches over the last two seasons and once again made a difference at the net for the Lady Tigers. A six-footer, she’s very physical and long and uses those skills extremely well on both sides of the ball to produce for her team. Trimble is very strong offensively and is capable of hitting quick sets down the middle and higher ones on both the left and the right with tremendous efficiency. Her contact point is extremely high and she also has a hammer of a right arm. The middle is also very active and smart with her blocking, helping the team’s defensive system, besides consistently getting points from the service line.
