Prep Dig was in attendance on Saturday, when we went to the FAST Complex, to take a look at the matches in the U16s divisions. It was a very strong field, with some interesting talent, and we’ll take the week to feature the players that stood out and raised their stocks against tough competition.
These middles were very effective at the net for their teams:
A new face with AVA TX 16 Adidas this season, Elliott helped the team dominate the division, finishing first with three victories. Her physicality was huge for her team at the net, especially on the defensive side of the game. Elliott was extremely active with her blocking, covering the net from pin to pin and working very aggressively above it with her long arms to take up space from opposing hitters. The middle also handled overpasses extremely well and seems to be starting to click offensively with her new setters.
Highlights
Avree Rawlins
Avree Rawlins
Rawlins’ presence at the net was huge for HJV 15 Premier as they successfully navigated a tournament against older opponents to finish second with two wins and a loss. A six-footer, she has very long arms and used them well to slow opponents down with her blocking. Rawlins read the game very well and was very efficient in dealing with overpasses and with how she positioned her arms in tight sets. Her offense is still coming together, but the middle scored at a good rate, even in moments of pressure.
Sarah Ojo
Sarah Ojo
Ojo helped Texas One – 16 Royal finish fourth with one win and two losses with her high-energy game down the middle. Battling taller middles for most of the day, she often outworked them with her tremendous intensity and athleticism. Her excellent footwork and her aggressiveness above the net made of Ojo a solid blocker, who often created problems for opposing hitters. Offensively, she was difficult to stop when she got into a rhythm, getting off the floor well and swinging with power.
Rebecca Lucksinger
Rebecca Lucksinger
HJV 16 Premier finished sixth with a win and two losses and had in their middle blocker duo formed by Lucksinger and Zainab Kareen one of their strongest areas. A six-footer, Lucksinger played with a lot of intensity at the net, making a big impact on the game. She was a strong offensive weapon for the team as she displayed a well-diversified game, being capable of hitting different sets with great efficiency, while also swinging with power. Lucksinger also had a solid blocking presence, moving well and putting pressure on opponents with her arms.
Kaycee Pennie
Kaycee Pennie
Pennie was the other starting middle of division winners AVA TX 16 Adidas, who went undefeated with three victories. If Elliott stood out mostly because of her blocking, the six-footer was a great offensive option for the team. Pennie displayed great footwork, which allowed her to hit all sorts of different sets. She was very successful in hitting a very quick set down the middle that often caught opponents off guard. The middle also showed a very quick right arm, which helped her swing with tremendous power.
