Prep Dig was in attendance on Saturday, when we went to the FAST Complex, to take a look at the matches in the U16s divisions. It was a very strong field, with some interesting talent, and we’ll take the week to feature the players that stood out and raised their stocks against tough competition.
These are the right side hitters who did very well for their teams:
Emory Harper
Emory Harper
Harper’s offensive power was pivotal for her team AVA TX 16 Adidas to win the division with an undefeated campaign of three wins. A physical, yet skilled hitter, she came up big for them on some occasions, putting the ball down in difficult and decisive plays. Harper was set on the right, the left and even the middle and displayed, besides a lot of power, excellent court vision to score points – on some occasions, she benefited from her hangtime to delay her swing a little bit and open up a new angle. She also played some outside hitter, contributing in serve-receive, and proved to have a very solid block at the net.
Wilkes was frequently on the court as her HJV 15 Premier team had a great run on Saturday, getting two wins in three matches to rank second. She had an interesting role with the team, coming off the bench to play the three backcourt rotations. Although her role was mainly a defensive one, she also contributed offensively, getting sets at the right back position and using her tremendous vertical and heavy right arm to swing with power and precision. Wilkes also got the job done defensively getting important digs.
Lauren Comstock
Lauren Comstock
The versatile Comstock was important for her team Katy United 16 Adidas as they ranked third with two wins and one loss. She was sort of a utility player for them, playing right side and outside hitter with great efficiency. A little bit of an undersized hitter, she displayed excellent technical skills and a very high volleyball IQ to score at the net, while also making very few mistakes. Comstock also contributed by joining the team’s serve-receive system, adding a new element to it.
Daisy Voskuhl
Daisy Voskuhl
Voskuhl helped her team Texas One – 16 Royal finish in the top four, getting one win and two losses to rank fourth. Probably the tallest and most physical player in the event, she used those features to her favor, becoming the team’s go-to scoring option. Voskuhl was very hard to stop because of the amount of power she was able to put into her swings, but she also displayed a well-diversified offensive game, hitting in different directions and scoring with finesse shots on some occasions. Her blocking was also a factor at the net as she made life difficult for opposing hitters.
Sophia Gray
Sophia Gray
Gray and her Houston Skyline 16 White team ranked seventh in the event with one win and two losses. She played on the right and also as an outside hitter and displayed some impressive technical skills, playing with great stability in serve-receive. Gray also scored with good efficiency from both pins, displaying great court vision and intelligence to hit around the block and find empty spots on the court.
