Continue ReadingSeven years ago the 12U club team I coached was playing a talented Southside 12-1 team. I couldn’t help but notice the tall, athletic, skilled and confident athlete running the court. So I made a point to talk with the coach after the match to figure out who this player was. Turns out it was 3rd-grade Brooke Friesen Brooke Friesen 6'0" | S Sprague | 2027 State OR . Even at the 12U level, many years younger than her 6th-grade teammates, she stood out. Now a freshman in high school, she continues to stand out among her peers given her height, athleticism, skill, and confidence. So much so that PrepDig Oregon has named her the #1 recruit for the class of 2027.
While Friesen’s primary position is as a setter, she is also an incredibly talented attacker, with experience on both the middle and right side, making her a well-rounded six-rotation player. Her setting capabilities are beyond her years, exuding the finesse of a much older player. With a natural hand strength, her contact point is high with the ability to push to the pins from far distances. Over the past few months, her jump setting has become much more refined and high-level. She does an exceptional job getting her hands on almost everything, translating mediocre passes into point-scoring opportunities for her attackers. Standing at 6 feet, she is versatile across the front row. When attacking, her arm swing packs a punch, with a quick arm and an aggressive snap, she proves to be an offensive threat.
In the 6A classification, she was arguably the most dominant freshman in the state and contributed mightily for Sprague High School both as an attacker and setter. Her play for the Olympians was critical in them securing the Central Valley Conference title and a 5th place finish in the 6A State tournament. For her dominant play, she received Central Valley First Team All-League. And with three more seasons still left in her high school career, this is only the beginning for Friesen.
Anne Olsen, Sprague High School Head CoachBrooke is an incredible athlete to coach. Brooke’s work ethic as well as her drive to win was so above and beyond most athletes her age. She has high expectations for herself as well as those around her. On and off the court, Brooke has such a positive attitude along with high competitiveness which helped our team greatly this last fall. We love having her around in our Sprague program.
I had the chance to email back and forth with Friesen, and she answered some questions for us:
1. Why did you choose to play volleyball? What got you hooked? What do you love about it?
I started playing when I was very young, finishing my first club season at 9 years old. Every year since the environment when I walk on the court has had a lasting and forever effect on my life. The things I love about volleyball are the intensity of the game and how much fun it is to play with your best friends in a sport we all love.
2. What has been your favorite memory volleyball has given you thus far?
I have been so lucky with my volleyball experiences, and it would be difficult to pick my favorite. The first highlight I can think of was qualifying for Nationals this past year during the club season. The level of play of the other national teams was challenging yet fun! We also competed in a tournament in Salt Lake City, where we played some of the top teams in the country. Another core memory was playing for Sprague High School, alongside my older sister, this past season. We finished as undefeated conference champions and competed in the state tournament where we finished 5th.
3. What is the best piece of advice you have been given that has helped you as an athlete?
The best advice I have been given was that it is ok to make mistakes. I have learned that mistakes are part of development. You will not improve unless you push yourself and learn.
4. What are your goals for your volleyball career? What are your aspirations for your high school and club career? Do you want to play collegiately?
For my remaining club years, I want to continue to compete at a high level and qualify for nationals each year. For high school, I want to continue to play on varsity and find how best to contribute to the team to compete at the state level again. My ultimate goal is to play in college to create lifetime friendships and more core memories.
