Continue ReadingIt was a busy weekend of club volleyball in Houston as the city hosted the 2024 edition of the Nike Cross Court Classic, one of the most anticipated and biggest tournaments of the season, from March 9-10.
Almost 700 teams took the courts at the George R. Brown Convention Center, in downtown, competing for two days in one of the 18 divisions of the tournament.
Prep Dig was in attendance on Saturday, when we got to watch the pool play matches of the event. One of the divisions we covered was 16 Open, which featured 14 teams, coming from several different regions of Texas. Some players stood out to us for their performances and we’re taking the week to report on them. First, we look at the setters:
Caryme Molina
Caryme Molina
Molina was the starting setter in the Houston Stellar 16 Elite team that won the division with six victories and just one set dropped. She had a very good group of hitters to work with and knew exactly how to make the most of them, distributing the ball well and feeling the moment of each of them with great intelligence. Very dynamic on the court, Molina also played excellent defense on the backcourt, reading the game well and displaying excellent ball control. She played some smart setter dumps over the day too.

Rocha ran McAllen Fierce 16-1’s offense extremely well and helped the team snatch a third-place finish with four wins and just one loss. Her team didn’t have the tallest or most physical hitters and she did a very good job to turn their offense into one of the best in the division with excellent choices and a high level of creativity. A lefty, Rocha was very skilled on the ball and also contributed to the team’s offense with some smart setter dumps. The setter also served a tough floater and played very good defense at the right back position.
Olivia Smith
Olivia Smith
With Smith at setter, Roots 16-2 Blue managed to end the event in fifth place with three wins and two losses. She split the setting duties with Lexi Rosenblatt Lexi Rosenblatt 5’9″ | S McCallum | 2026 TX and the two kept the team’s offense in a good rhythm for most of the day. Smith was very technical and that allowed her to remain accurate with her setters even when working with passes off the net. The playmaker also showed a very calm and focused approach to the game, working well under pressure.
The talented Pena helped Alamo 16 Elite rank seventh in the division with two wins and three losses. One of the most technical players in the field, she was very smooth with her playmaking, contributing to the consistency of the team’s offense. Pena displayed a very quick release and was very precise and smart with her locations. The setter also proved to have a very high volleyball IQ, making good decisions in difficult moments and contributing to the team’s success.
