The HBCU Showcase was a fantastic opportunity for volleyball players graduating in the class of 2024-2028 to showcase their skills in front of HBCU coaches, scouts, and former volleyball veterans.
I asked Coach Speed about the mission of Black Volleyball Circuit, in which she stated “our events are for the culture. No matter the level, there is a place for everyone. We know that most HBCUs don’t have a recruting budget, so we want to alleviate this by bringing the colleges and the players under one roof.” As a former HBCU volleyball player, I can attest this is true and it can be difficult to be seen, in most cases due to lack of support and resources.
Here are some standout players from Nevada and California that turned heads at the event:
Addison Culbert
Addison Culbert
Addison’s presence on the right side was truly remarkable, as her exceptional vertical leap and commanding left-handed swing set her apart from many of her peers at the showcase. Finding out that this talented hitter was only a freshman added to the surprise and excitement of her performance. With her evident skill and potential, there’s no doubt that Addison will continue to sharpen her skills and emerge as a top prospect in California’s competitive volleyball scene.
Aleiah is another great player that really shined as a right-side hitter at the showcase. Her approach is all about maximizing power, whether it’s for a forceful swing or a strategic tip. Notably, she’s consistently impressed at various events, earning previous recognition as a top performer at the Prepdig CA Top 250 Expo back in November. After reviewing more footage of Carr, I found out she also excels in beach volleyball. This can significantly boost her college offers with the growing availability of beach scholarships alongside indoor opportunities.

Representing Las Vegas, I got the chance to see Jada in action on the right side. She made it look really easy with her powerful swing off the block or right through blockers hands. Jada’s ability to quickly transition of the net ensures she remains a constant threat on the court, whether hitting line or cross-court, presenting a challenge for the defense. Her standout performance leaves me excited to see what she accomplishes next in her career.
Highlights
Micah Floyd
Micah Floyd
The first thing that impressed me most about Micah was her incredible serve. Her float serve was undeniably one of the best at the showcase, making it challenging for many of the attendees to return it. She was definitely a standout amongst several defensive specialists and liberos that were there. In addition to being a great DS, she boasts an 8’11 1/2”approach jump at only 5’3” which allows her to get some front row action on her high school team. The junior should continue to be a threat in Nevada through her senior year.
Cathleen Alston
Cathleen Alston
Cathleen’s standout performance playing outside hitter caught my attention at the showcase. Her lightning-fast swing was showcased both on the outside and in the middle, highlighting her versatility as a hitter. As a freshman, her aggressive play and high volleyball IQ make her a promising prospect. After watching more film of Alston, it’s evident that she has the potential to excel as a 6-rotation player if she sticks to playing outside, positioning herself for success within her state.
With over 1000 players and 50+ college coaches in attendance thus far, these events are continually expanding with each successful showcase. If you are interested in attending future showcases, you can register to attend the Dallas Showcase on June 14 and Atlanta Showcase on June 29.
