I love defensive players on the volleyball court. I am not sure if you know this or not, but a team cannot win without a good defense on their side. These defensive specialists were putting on a show at the Prep Dig Preview last week and I would love nothing more than to sing their praises.

LaSalle is a 5'2" defensive specialist from Windward High School. LaSalle is speedy and has a great pancake. She is one of the quickest footed athletes I saw at the event. She has a great platform and is wonderful with serve/receive. She serves aces and has a high serve efficiency. She is very anticipatory and looks great on the court. I would choose her to be on my team if I were playing.

June Onaindia

Onaindia is a defensive specialist from Frontier High School. Onaindia plays low to the ground and on the tips of her toes. She is always ready for whatever is coming her way, has a great platform, and reflexes to deal with it. She has a good serve and is a good jumper. She can hit from the back row and makes points.

Rateliff is a defensive specialist from Frontier High School. Rateliff is not afraid to put her body in front of some powerfully hit balls. She puts it up to put it back into play and prevents points. She is an impact player for her team and is a constant defensive power. She hits from the back row and can tool it off of her opponent's defensive athletes in their own back row. She did this successfully several times during scrimmages.

Rebagliati is a defensive specialist from Marymount High School. I honestly do not think I have ever seen an athlete as successful at turning around and digging a ball up to her setter backwards as Rebagliati. She has very good hands and a lot of athleticism at her disposal. She is low to the ground and quick on her feet. She is very impressive when moving around the court. She is so fast she was under the ball before I found her again after watching the opposing court. She is a very impressive athlete and has so much more time to develop as her experience continues.

Wulff-Smith is a 5'7" DS/L from Garces Memorial High School. Wulff-Smith uses her relative height to her advantage and pulls down balls meant to go just over a defender's head and fall inside the boundary. She handles it well and gets it to her setter to make meaningful plays. She is consistent, has a great platform, and is very athletic during scrimmages. She knows where to move to for the most coverage available by her.
