It's hard to imagine a team being 14-1 at this stage in the season (with wins against stellar opponents & a loaded schedule) and you likely have not heard about them in the media yet. Not to mention, this is a team from a 2A IHSAA school (second smallest division in the state) who often plays 4A schools (largest division), and has a solid program history WITH a hall of fame coach. The Brownstown Central Lady Braves are legit, and I am going to do my best to convince you that this is a team you need to be paying attention to because they are on a path to do special things this year.

Big Wins

Brownstown plays a PACKED schedule filled with absolute perennial powerhouses from 1A to 4A schools, including Trinity Lutheran (#1 1A), Providence, Floyd Central and Cathedral (#8 3A), who handed the Lady Braves their lone loss so far this season. When a 2A school like B.C. defeats a year-after-year dominant 4A school like Floyd Central (#5 4A) in three straight sets, you know this team is bound to do some damage in the 2A state tourney come October. Other notable wins against always good programs include SWEEPS of Bloomington North (#27 4A), Jasper (#13 3A) and Silver Creek (#5 3A).

Volleyball excellence runs deep in her family, and she is continuing that tradition well. I am just in awe of her ability to do all of the things well that a 6 rotation OH needs to do: serve, play defense, pass, block and hit. And she does them all with energy, hustle, passion and a serious will to compete. This young lady has IT and is the perfect consistent, confident leader for this B.C. squad.

With an insane vertical and heavy arm swing, Dean consistently puts balls DOWN. She currently is hitting at a .420 clip and is second on the team in kills per set behind Wischmeier with 2.4. You know you're in good shape when your MB is second on the team in kills - it means your offense is balanced AND your ball handling is in a good place.

Finley Wheeler, Junior, S
Wheeler is the one who makes this whole thing tick. As the lone setter she is currently at 373 assists total and averaging 9.6 assists/set. Finley is no slouch on defense either where she is in the Top 3 in digs on the team; it is always a HUGE positive for a team when your setter loves to play defense. In the match I watched against Cathedral, Wheeler was always going for the ball and never gave up on a play.

A top-of-the-line libero, and B.C. has just that in Jaydynn. She currently has 202 total digs (through just 39 sets played - 6th in the state), with the closest player on the team having 129 total. On top of that, she is averaging over 5 digs per set. With a senior defender like Yeadon on their team, you can NEVER count them out - this young lady is going to give it everything she has to get that state title they barely missed out on last season.

A Hall of Fame, Proven Coach

As the season comes closer and closer to tourney time, we all know how important an experienced and challenge-tested coaching staff can be. Jennifer Shade is just that... a newly inducted Hall of Fame coach in Indiana with 21 sectional titles, 16 regional titles, nine semi-state crowns and a Class 2A state championship in 2019, with an overall record of 693-251. She also has one of the top 8 win totals of all-time in the state of Indiana. In other words, this incredible coach knows what she is doing, and she especially knows how to prepare her teams for the state tournament.

My advice to you after all this?

Pay attention to the Lady Braves the rest of this season. Whether you are a player, a parent, or a coach, you'll get to see all aspects of the game played at a really high level and you'll see exceptional coaching. These young ladies (and coaches) have earned the right to be recognized and celebrated - they play hard, always show up to compete, have a lot of talent and they sure have a ton of fun playing the game together.
