The always formidable Wolves were going through growing pains when I watched them at Johnston during the first week of the season. They lost to Iowa City High, 2-0, there and then turned the tables by sweeping the Little Hawks at Benton.

Here are scouting reports on Marion followed by photos from last weekend:

The Gannon (PA) commitment does it all for Marion. She stands out similarly to the way she does in club as a dynamic front-row player, but also shines in the back row. Webber is an explosive athlete with an excellent vertical leap, hangtime at the apex of her jump and a powerful follow-through on her swing. Her versatility at the net should help her get on the court early in college. Webber could help at any of the three front-row spots. She's a sound defender all around the court.

Mehaffy joins Webber as a versatile, play-making senior capable of impacting the match on a consistent basis. She can attack from anywhere along the front row. While Mehaffy might fit best on the right side in college, she also has a good feel for hitting at the other pin. Her helping in the middle shouldn't be ruled out, either. Mehaffy flashes the potential for growth in defending and already does it well.

Goudzwaard seemingly looks improved each time there's a live scouting opportunity, whether that be with Marion or in club. It was noticeable just from the Johnston tournament to last weekend. Goudzwaard moves well laterally and owns reflexes necessary in reacting to hard attacks. She's technically sound in serve-receive and in passing. Goudzwaard has good court vision, which allows her to be in proper position much more often than not.

Wieseler caught my eye with her play in Johnston, and she impressed again in Benton. The prototypical lefty on the right side, her swing packs a punch, and she gets up off the ground. Wieseler hits with good efficiency and has a sound sense for defending at the net. She's agile enough to help in the back row as well.

Nobody has improved more through this season than has Whalen among the Wolves. At Johnston, she still was getting used to where her attackers like the ball and getting down their timing. It's a much more well-oiled machine with Whalen consistently providing her hitters optimal swing opportunities. She has good height for the position, which lets her defend at the net. She's also one of the better back-row defenders on Marion.

Johnson plays an important role in the back row for the Wolves. She shows the potential to move into the libero spot in the future and is a prospect on which to keep an eye. She possesses the requisite skills to be strong in playing any of the back-row positions. Johnson has keen court vision and anticipates the attack to get into proper position. She covers a lot of the floor with her quickness and lateral movement.
