Five Players Thriving in New Positions This Season

While some know right away where they belong, others may stick to a specific role based on their early experiences in club or school. The beauty of the sport is that you can uncover a hidden talent in a completely different position simply by trying it out during practice, stepping up to get more playing time or stepping in for an injured player. Whatever the reason may be, it can often be for the best and showcases your tenacity.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Several players have showcased their high-level skills in their previous roles last season, but have found their true calling in new positions. Outsides are now excelling as middles, middles are thriving on the right side, and hitters have transitioned to setters. She's really found her groove and is having an outstanding sophomore year with the #1 team in Nevada, Bishop Gorman. In her first year on varsity, she's already racked up 57 kills and 30 blocks playing in her new position. Her hard work during the club season and summer is clearly paying off. She has a lightning-fast swing and maintains high energy throughout the match, really hyping her team up after a big kill. This high school season, she made the transition to the right side, showcasing her versatility when playing just about any position on the front row. In her new role as an opposite, she is standing out and tallying some impressive stats. Currently,<strong> she has 92 total kills and 76 digs</strong>. Over the summer, I saw her working on her setter footwork and technique, but she returned to the court as a hitter for the school season. Recently, she stepped up and put her setter training to good use, delivering 24 assists in her most recent game in that position. She led the state in hitting percentage (.435) and helped Bishop Gorman secure a 5A state championship. During last club season with the Vegas Aces, she gained valuable experience playing outside and in the back row as a six-rotation player. I always believed that while she excelled in the middle, she could be just as impactful on the outside, allowing her to stay on the court longer. Now a UNLV commit, she has truly found her rhythm in her new role, contributing 154 kills, 129 digs, 22 aces, and an impressive .315 hitting percentage. Whether she's hitting, passing or setting, she finds a way to commit and do her best wherever she is on the court. Last season, I mainly saw her in the setter role, but this year, she's not only leading in assists but also playing as a pin hitter, accumulating an impressive number of kills. As one of her team's top contributors, her well-rounded game truly stands out.
