I love looking at a volleyball leaderboard and seeing names I have never heard of in Kansas.

That happened this morning as I dove into the assist leaders in the class of 2027.

This week I will be featuring the class of 2027 in my stat leader reports. This morning I began with a report on the five sophomores among the state leaders in kills, here is a look at five setters dishing out the ball to attackers.

Stats and records were found on Max Preps and the KSHSAA website. I can't stress enough how key it is for coaches to update information on both sites.

I also expect to publish updated rankings this month or next depending on my schedule. It's not too late to claim your Prep Dig profiles for FREE at this link https://prepdig.com/prospect-index/ or send me stats through email or on X.

Jonalee Zwyegardt, 5'4”, S, South Gray, ‘27

Zweygardt was one of those unrecognized names I referred to earlier. She is currently unranked but unofficially leads all sophomore setters with 483 assists in 52 sets played. South Gray has a current record of 19-4 in Class 1A DI. They are in Region 3, which also includes Spearville (17-1) and South Central (20-2)

[player_tooltip player_id='699386' first='Ellie' last='Bloom'], 5'6”, S, Frontenac, ‘27

Bloom has recorded 442 assists in 51 sets and is an unranked athlete I have not seen play in person. The Raiders will compete in Class 3A's Region 2. They are currenlty sitting as the No. 2 seed in the region with a record of 15-5. Region 2 also includes Girard (20-3) and Jayhawk Linn (12-4).

[player_tooltip player_id='478871' first='Maryn' last='Dean'], 5'9”, S, Bishop Miege, ‘27 (Pictured Above)

I saw Dean play this past weekend in the Seaman Invitational. She is a setter who plays quick pace and is surrounded by solid talent. She has collected 441 assists in 49 sets. The Stags are the defensing Class 4A state champion. They are in the East Sub-State and own a record of 7-11. They typically face larger schools during the regular season and then knock off a higher-seeded team to qualify for state. Bishop Miege will have its work cut out in the East that also features Hayden (21-2) and Rock Creek (23-4).

[player_tooltip player_id='551331' first='Ellie' last='Wisdom'], 5'7”, S, Maize, ‘27

Wisdom is another athlete whose skills are fresh in mind. I scouted the Maize tournament two weekends ago. Wisdom has taken over the starting setter position for the Eagles in place of her older sister Zoe, who has suffered a season-ending knee injury. Ellie has tallied 372 assists in 56 sets played. Maize currently has a record of 11-12 and is the middle of the pack in the Class 6A West Sub State. Washburn Rural (11-2), Wichita North (14-4), and Garden City (13-6) have the best three records out west.

[player_tooltip player_id='566827' first='Brooke' last='Bieker'], 5'10”, S, Hays, ‘27

The tallest setter among this group is Bieker. I saw Hays compete in a summer tournament at Washburn. Beiker is currenlty ranked No. 123 overall by Prep Dig. She has recorded 353 assists in 41 sets played. She also has 17 kills and 11 total blocks. Hays would be the No. 7 seed out west if the season ended today. The Indians have a record of 12-5. It will be tough to advance from the West as 14 of the 18 teams have winning records. Seaman (21-1), Andover (15-2), Andover Central (19-3), and Kapaun Mt. Carmel (19-3) have the four best records and are closely followed by Great Bend (12-2) and Bishop Carroll (14-5).
