<p><strong>CORALVILLE, Iowa - </strong>Mount Vernon wore the crown of Class 3A favorite from the start. Despite it get heavy at times, the Mustangs carried it to a state championship by defeating defending champion Western Christian for the title Thursday here at Xtream Arena.</p>

<p>"We kind of knew that going in," right-side hitter [player_tooltip player_id='215389' first='Sydney' last='Maue'] said of handling pressure. "At one of our camps before the season even started, that's what we focused on. We always did super-hard drills in practice, always focusing on the mental game, sometimes even more than the physical."</p>

<p>Mount Vernon turned the tables on the Wolfpack, which beat it in the final match a year ago. It swept its way to the program's fifth state championship this week. </p>

<p>"It feels so good, all the seniors, especially," all-stater [player_tooltip player_id='215385' first='Chloe' last='Meester'] said. "We came up short (before), and it hasn't felt great. Finally doing this our senior year, we gave it our all out there on the court. It was amazing." </p>

<p>Meester and Maue combined for 30 kills, [player_tooltip player_id='215387' first='Sydney' last='Huber'] dished out 38 assists and Eryn Jackson came up with 15 digs for the champs. </p>

<p>Western Christian reached the final after graduating a lot of talent off of last season's title team. The young Wolfpack set themselves up for more success 2025. </p>

<p>"We're just very young. They're a lot older than us," junior [player_tooltip player_id='455736' first='Maggie' last='Van Schepen'] said. "They hit hard at us, and that's what got us." </p>
