NorCal MVPs: Coaches Highlight Standouts from PrepDig Showcases

I had the privilege of attending the NorCal PrepDig Freshman and Stock Up Showcases, hosted at [program_tooltip program_id='545945' first='Rage' last='Volleyball Club'] in Ripon, CA. One of the most rewarding aspects of this event was watching the on-site coaches select their own MVPs, players who stood out not just for their athletic abilities, but for the complete package they brought to the court.   Each coach evaluated players firsthand, observing more than just stats or standout plays. They paid close attention to communication, coachability, hustle, and the subtle ways athletes elevated those around them.   This process closely mirrors how college coaches scout talent. It's not always about who jumps the highest or hits the hardest. It's about finding players with a rare blend of skill, work ethic, and character, the kind of presence that leaves a lasting impression.   What made this MVP selection so meaningful was the freedom each coach had to define what excellence looked like. For some, it was leadership and vocal presence. For others, it was resilience, relentless effort, or the ability to make an impact without even touching the ball. Offensively, she established herself as a reliable force, consistently finding ways to score through fast-paced attacks, quick sets, and smart placement. Defensively, she brought intensity to the front row, reading the hitters well and putting up a strong, disciplined block.   What truly elevated Johanna's performance was her court awareness and team-first communication. She was constantly engaged in the flow of the game, connecting with her setter, calling out plays, and staying vocal throughout each rally. Selected by Coach Breanna Banks, Amaree showcased the versatility to dominate as both a middle blocker and right-side hitter, always active, always engaged, and always ready to make a play.   As a middle, Amaree's coverage was exceptional. She moved fluidly along the net, reading hitters and sealing blocks with precision. Her communication stood out, constantly directing her pin blockers and calling out tendencies to help organize the defense. That leadership created a noticeable ripple effect across the court.   Offensively, Amaree brought the heat. Whether swinging off a slide, quick set, or out-of-system ball, her arm speed and strength made her attacks nearly unstoppable. She read the game exceptionally well, positioning herself early and consistently delivering clean, on-target passes that fueled her team's offense.   As a libero, Mia played with composure and purpose. Her ability to communicate clearly and confidently helped her teammates stay organized and locked in on every point. She took ownership of the court, calling balls with conviction, supporting her hitters, and keeping the team connected through transitions.   Her defensive range, combined with her willingness to lay it all out for the ball, made her a constant presence in every play. What truly set Kalaya apart was her attitude and leadership. She lit up the court with her positivity, celebrating teammates, embracing every point with enthusiasm, and leading by example. Offensively, Olivia's explosive transition and smart arm swing allowed her to find open seams in the block and consistently score, even in high-pressure moments. Her fast footwork and quick reaction time gave her an edge in every play. As a setter, she delivered clean, accurate balls and kept her hitters in rhythm. As an attacker, she brought a strong, speedy arm swing and the ability to find gaps in the defense. No matter the position, she moved with urgency and precision.   Grayson's hustle was unmatched. She maintained clear communication with teammates, made smart decisions in transition, and brought a contagious energy to the court. Always on the hunt for a swing, Faye kept opposing blockers on their heels with her quick transitions and aggressive approach. Whether hitting from the outside or right side, she made it clear that she came to compete, and to finish rallies with authority.   Beyond her physical tools, Faye brought a spark to her team that didn't go unnoticed. In serve receive, she was as steady as they come, delivering precise passes that allowed her setter to run a smooth offense. Defensively, she was fearless, scooping up attacks from all angles, reading hitters early, and keeping the ball off the floor with consistency and grit. Rachel plays with the kind of intelligence and anticipation that anchors a backcourt.   What truly set her apart was her presence.
