G's Ball Control Queens at Houston Freshman Showcase

The high school volleyball season is quickly approaching in the state of Texas, and on Sunday, we from Prep Dig Texas had a fantastic opportunity to see first-hand some of the talented prospects who are set to start their high school careers over the next few weeks.   Our traditional Prep Dig Freshman Showcase made it to Houston, with dozens of the best class of 2029 players from H-Town and beyond getting together for two hours of fast-paced drills at the [program_tooltip program_id='462263' first='TAV' last='Houston'] facility.   It was a privilege to have the opportunity to get a sneak peek at the prospects we'll be covering for the next four years and there was a lot of talent on display on the court.   We'll take the week to feature some of the players who stood out in our showcase and we begin with the players who displayed outstanding ball control and the ability to make a difference on the backcourt:    Also capable of playing as a setter, Pham was hands down one of the most technical players in the event. Her ability to make an impact on the backcourt started to show early on as she was extremely productive in the defense and serve-receive drills. Besides displaying impressive ball control, Pham also stood out for her quickness on the backcourt, which allowed her to recover shanked passes and spilled digs outside the court. She also showcased a great attitude on the court, consistently communicating with her teammates and encouraging them.     Smith was a dynamo on the backcourt and not many players matched her determination and energy to keep the ball off the floor. The libero didn't hold anything back when chasing the ball on defense and made the most of her athletic tools to explode for the ball and get to it in no time. She also showcased tremendous ball control and was capable of delivering the ball perfectly to her setter even when she had to dive to dig it. That combination of ball control and the ability to cover ground also made of Smith one of the best passers in the event.     Guzman was another defensive player who was in the top tier of our event. One of her main strengths was her excellent positioning, which repeatedly got her in good spots to either get a touch on the ball on the backcourt herself or to help a struggling teammate. Guzman also stood out with her impressive reaction speed and displayed great intelligence to improvise and make use of emergency techniques to keep the ball off the floor. The libero also thrived with her communication, making very clear who should go for the ball and keeping her teammates engaged.     Winn displayed a great attitude on the backcourt, operating as a backcourt general and leading the defensive efforts with confidence and authority. She was very aware of her role as a libero and was very quick to step up and take the responsibility of passing free balls, accurately delivering them to her setter. The libero was also very active when playing defense, displaying excellent reflexes and ball control to get several touches. Winn has an interesting ability to remain focused and was always in the right spot when covering her hitters in the game-like drills, generating many second-chance opportunities for her team.
