On the first day, teams had to win at least one game to stay alive for the Championship Flight on Sunday. The second day is generally a different story unless two teams go 2-1 in a pool play consisting of four teams. That left a number of exciting games around 1 p.m. as two teams battled to make it into that championship flight at Paul Laurence Dunbar.

Four of those matches went three games. Lafayette edged out DuPont Manual, 2-1 (18-21, 21-19, 15-12) and West Jessamine bested Ashland, 2-1 (14-21, 21-18, 15-12). In Pool TT, Male edged out defending 14th Region champion Knott County Central, 2-1 (14-21, 21-19, 17-16) winning the final capped point in the third game.

The 24-time state champion Assumption Rockets entered their varsity and junior varsity teams in the Varsity Division and nearly got both to the championship flight. However, the Holy Cross (Louisville) Cougars knocked off the Assumption Junior Varsity, 2-1 (21-14, 13-21, 15-13) in a tight one.

The two other Louisville powers Sacred Heart and Mercy joined Assumption in the Championship Flight. The other 15 schools are Elizabethtown, Bowling Green, Great Crossing, Lexington Catholic, Ballard, Bryan Station, Ryle, McCracken County, Christian Academy-Louisville, Collins, South Warren, Central Hardin, Henry Clay, Greenwood and host Dunbar.

Rexroad had some big serves to keep Ashland out of system on Saturday. Rexroad said Ashland's two middles have tough angles to block, but the team learned how to work with them as the game progressed.

Taylor helps give the Purples the balance they so desire from the outside. She takes hard rips to different parts of the court and is sound at forming double blocks at the net. When not in the game, Taylor shows a lot of enthusiasm on the sidelines. Taylor said the Purples go hard in practice and make each other better as a result.

Hatfield showed why she's a force at the net in the win over Corbin on Saturday. She goes up strong and makes hitters think while in the air. That forced some hitting errors. Hatfield goes all out on defense trying to make plays. Hatfield said the team has good individual blocks now, but the Mustangs are figuring out how to close on them better as a team.
